£115 uk customs charge!

Oh my days I would be livid if I had to pay duty on my own goods being sent back to me!
I was, and didn't handle the call to customs and excise in my usual exemplary telephone manner

At least the guy I spoke to knew how I felt :)

The problem is, that if you refuse to pay, they send the item back, but in this case, it was mine, but it would not have been sent back to me :?:

"I really object to paying customs duty."

In a totally tariff-free world....there'd be precious few on here with any employment or income.

The charges seem right. Just factor it in when buying from the US and if you don't get charged in full, bonus!

As for charges on your own items, if you provide evidence of export for repair and an invoice for the work, you are only charged VAT on the value of the invoice ie the same as you would pay on labour in the UK.

Hope the bike is worth it!

I always ask for them to mark it as 'Commerical Sample - Not for resale'. (if new goods)

If they won't do that then get them to put it down as $30. I've honestly bought hundreds of items from the USA over ten years and only ever paid duty once, even on £1000 purchases.

Often, if you declared the real value the charge would be so great you can almost self insure. IE. a £300 frame might have £100 duty/tax/fees, meaning I take the risk on having no or low insurance balanced against the duty I would have paid.

Another advantage of faking the forms is that it never gets held in Customs while some temp works out how much to stiff you for...

Just remember folks that tax avoidance is legally minimising your tax exposure (as in what the holding company that owns Boots does by basing itself off shore). Tax evasion (as in faking the forms) is illegal.

It's a crazy world.

you can check on line what the import duty and vat will be, somewhere on uk gov website.

they normally charge you VAT on the item then another 5% of the value including that VAT charge for handling fees
