Does anyone know anything about Jacques Anquetil bikes?

Re: What about this for a 1967 Ron Kit Anquetil Maillot Jaune?

WORKSOP SUN?? Restoration Present for my dad

Re: Chaps, Have a close look at the decals.. up until 1970, I seem to recall, the decals were Italic script but then they changed to the fashionable at the time block printing. Additionally at about this time, Weinmann Centre Pull pretty much replaced side pull as being the popular spec. I...

    Saxon twin tube circa 1937

Re: The value of yours is almost entirely in the frame. your frame is smaller than average and therefore may not be as attractive as a 22" or 23". An un-restored Saxon Twin Tube recently sold on e-bay for circa £550. (This was in camouflage as a Jack Taylor which it is not and the head tube had...

    Saxon Twin Tube

the mystery thickens... The Geometry is consistent with the 38/39 frame, but the head lugs are consistent with the slightly earlier Saxons. 26" wheels are more likely to be pre war... The frame number is NOT consistent with the 38/39 Saxons, nor is it consistent with Claud Butler numbering...

Claud Butler Frame from which year?

not really just ACs, but as you probably gathered from earlier posts, got Saxons and CBs. (I like the very original 1930s Saxon on ebay at moment but will not be tempted!) on the frame... Only thing have found really works is Jeweller grade emery cloth and gentle elbow grease. Happy days! Chris

Claud Butler Frame from which year?

Terry, would you agree that the date on my Avant Coureur (the patina duck egg blue frame in the last photo) is January 1950? CB frame #993 501 Incidentally the varnish has lost its nature on this frame and after I sand it back I get to the clean paint. Any tips for removing old varnish without...

Claud Butler Frame from which year?

Re: Hi Terry, I thought that the first 8 would possibly signify 1948 as opposed to 1958 (becuase Holdsworth did not make any Bi-Lams). What I did not say is that all 4 drop outs are Simplex and I just cannot see why anybody would change all 4... Furthermore, the Avant Coureur was not infact in...

Claud Butler Frame from which year?

Can anybody help me date my Claud Butler frame? What I do know is that it has Axe Bi-laminate 'lugs' and that these lugs were generally used on the Avant Coureur from 1947 to 1951 and on the New All Rounder from 1952 to 1956.The Frame has Simplex drop-outs and not the fluted top to the seat...

    Saxon Twin Tube

Interesting. I was aware from a potted history of Hill Specials that the saxon name and twin tube design may have passed through Adam Hill's ownership in the late 1950s. The history on this website is more definitive and sounds very credibile. Would love to see a picture of a twin tube Hill...

    Saxon Twin Tube

Re: Just for completeness, here is a copy of the 1953 Catalogue entry for the Saxon Twin Tube TT model. you can see the different geometry and the much shorter twin tubes. unfortunately I suspect the resolution is not good enough to see it, but the transfers are the same as on your bike...

    Saxon Twin Tube

I agree all your observations re appearance of the frame... The geometry is definately more 1939 than 1953! I recall in the 70s being told by a former racer that Saxon had been "Bombed in the war" I read that: "Saxon closed in November 1939 for reasons that are unknown with HHJ Cadell as sole...

    Saxon Twin Tube

lets try a different avenue of investigation... This frame number has 6 digits. Saxon numbers up to 1939 had 5 digits latterly starting with an 8 or 9. Claud Butler frames have a 6 digit number. The "Saxon TT" was introduced in the Claud Butler catalogue from 1953 and was still in the catalogue...

Re: What would also be interesting is the dating of the Williams Chainset. Like solid silver has a hallmark, the Williams Chainsets also had an identifiable mark on the back and also on some of the cranks check out the following links: http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/wi ... ating.html...

Re: Here is the Saxon catalogue entry for 1939. All the headbadges of the bikes featured in that catalogue are the circular badge...(also attach an example from a twin tube) However, your headbadge is 100% genuine. you will note that the reproduction transfers put on Saxons and featured on the...

    Saxon Twin Tube

Re: Thanks. When I get my broadband up again, I will post a couple of images for you from the original Saxon catalogue. Not quite identified this model but I am pretty sure it is one from 1939. Have you found the frame number yet on the rear RH drop out lug?

    Saxon Twin Tube

Re: Saxon 1938 or 1939 is correct Saxon closed in November 1939 and the twin tube patent was registered in February 1938. All the Saxon Twin Tubes were supplied with 26" wheels. I would recommend that if the bike has it's original paintwork, you retain it. I would be interested in the frame...
