Saxon Twin Tube

Re:

Thanks. When I get my broadband up again, I will post a couple of images for you from the original Saxon catalogue. Not quite identified this model but I am pretty sure it is one from 1939. Have you found the frame number yet on the rear RH drop out lug?

Theres a number on the bb - 815758

As Ned said the newer one had a different design and as far as I can tell this model was the late 30's. Albeit mine has plainer lugs than the others I have seen on the net however I do believe that there were a variety (3?) models available at the time...

even now Tel this still amazes me , and looking at pics again i seeing different details that i hadnt seen before .

please keep original paintwork as i think a new paint job will take away a lot of the originality that bikes like this deserve to keep , but hey what do i know

Re:

Here is the Saxon catalogue entry for 1939. All the headbadges of the bikes featured in that catalogue are the circular badge...(also attach an example from a twin tube) However, your headbadge is 100% genuine. you will note that the reproduction transfers put on Saxons and featured on the internet do not have the swords penetrating the 'A' and the 'O' letters. If there is anybody out there who can give the history surrounding your headbadge, i would love to hear it because it does not feature in Saxon brochures up to 1939.

Re:

What would also be interesting is the dating of the Williams Chainset. Like solid silver has a hallmark, the Williams Chainsets also had an identifiable mark on the back and also on some of the cranks
check out the following links:

This might give you a clue to the date of your bike.

..and just to make it even more confusing, the lugs on your machine are the same as the lugs on my pre 1937 Saxon Bailey Path.

Re:

Thanks for all that info! I'll research further when sat back at my PC. Does the frame number I gave not give anything away?

Thanks again!

I note from this page by Hilary Stone: http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/de ... saxon.html

"It was offered in three models – TT Road Race, Twin-Tube Path and Paramount which was their top model."

I wonder if they had different lugs between the models? Curious about the headbadge I did also notice that the downtube decal is central rather than one on each side as I would expect to see:

This refurbished/ modernised version pictured on the page above does not have a round badge, although as I mentioned it has been refurbed:

Also bit of a mystery for me is the lug above the mudguard eyes (in use in this picture). It's the same shape as a mudguard eye but higher and only on the drive side. I thought it maybe for a suicide changer but someone told me it was probably or a reflector (!?)

I remember seeing this type of lug on the drive side seat stay on some bikes years ago, and them being used for mounting the rear light of a dynamo lighting system.

my old Pollard track/path frame has same lug/mount point on both rear stays
