    Rory O'Brien Frame Numbers

I have a ROB with the frame # A4044, it came to me in original looking condition with Universal 61 brakes and 'no-record' Campa Record hubs (Nisi rims I think), so I presume it is early sixties. The person from whom I bought it had a good reason for thinking it was built by Ephgrave (it is not a...

    F H GRUBB FRAME DECALS

Re: Have just spoken to Hilary re the Grubb decal. He says that the underline tail with 'Limited' within was copied (by Nick T) from an original frame that had been sent to him, (Hilary), for restoration. It and the catalogue were/are of the same design. I think that leaves us with three...

    F H GRUBB FRAME DECALS

Re: Spoke to Steve at HLLOYD today and he told me the FHGrubb with 'Limited' in the underline tail was copied by Nick T from an original.

    F H GRUBB FRAME DECALS

VeloFellow54. It hadn't occurred to me that the dt decals from Hlloyd were made up, just a copy of the catalogue logo but I'm beginning to think you may be correct. A shame as I'll have to have some of my frames re-finished. In the circa 1950 catalogue some frames are illustrated with 'FREDDIE...

    F H GRUBB FRAME DECALS

Re: Regarding the downtube decals, I have been trying to work out when these changed from one style to another. I have a 1936/7 Anglo Continental, the previous long term owner swears it is in original finish; it has the smaller FHGrubb script with 'Limited'' in the underline 'tail'. As Grubb...

    Claud Butler help please

Re: I believe the braze-ons are for a chain oiler. Oil goes in the top and the oiler 'arm' (missing) can be tilted to drip oil onto the chain.

    Who knows the answer?

Re: I have just noticed that in the 1958 Campa catalogue the ball bearings are specified in imperial sizes. It is the english version so perhaps they were being kind but it looks as if those of us the put 1/4 inch balls in our bb are safe.

    Who knows the answer?

Re: There are metric sized balls. I used 3.5mm in my 1960 Bianchi headset. Believe it or not 1/8 left a gap, (not much of a gap its true). I have not though used metric balls in my hubs and bb, perhaps I should.

    1958 Condor restoration

Re: I have a 1956 Condor which I bought from the original owner; made for him by WBH. I was keen to return it to period spec and in conversation with the owner the spec was pretty much as KeithGlos describes. He preferred bar controls and used Cyco rather than Campagnolo which would have been...

when and how did your retro obsession start

Re: About ten years ago I thought it was time to do some exercise, there wouldn't be any point in having a modern bike so I bought an old Claud Butler. Then I made the mistake of reading about the characters involved in the bespoke bicycle manufacture of the 50's and 60's and it became a...

Parts for a restored 1948 RRA frameset

Re: I have two RRAs; one is the usual touring model with 27 inch Dunlop SL rims and a Sturmey FW (I believe an AM or FM would be most common). Of more interest to the original poster is a 1949 RRA ordered as a TT single speed bike by a well known VCC member. It has no mudguards obviously, but...

    Hetchins 1958 Magnum Bonum

Re: 58 MB The hanger was meant for a Campagnolo mech, the only one available period wise would be the Gran Sport (there is the Sport but they are uncommon). I cannot see, but presume the dt braze-ons are for Campagnolo levers so, as it was built as a ten speed, you may as well go the whole hog...

    Simplex juy 60 instructions ?

The problem I have with JUY 543 and 60 is having a length of cable sticking out after the retaining screw, cutting it to exactly the right length is tricky. The extra rubs on the inside of the face-plate and I worry that it might push it off, not so much a problem on the 60 as the face plate is...

Help required with vintage parts - 1952 Hobbs of Barbican

I suppose it depends on the drop-out width and whether there are any braze-ons for levers. A Sturmey could be appropriate, perhaps a Simplex TDF (3,4 or 5 speed). It may have been a single gear bike when new. Chainset; Chater Lea or Williams, Durax if feeling extrvagant. GB brakes. Worlds your...
