Gearing options for 110mm rear spacing

I've got a 30s lightweight frame with 110mm rear spacing. Looking at the clearance either side of my fixed/free Normandy hub, would I be right in saying that without stretching the stays it was only intended for a fixed cog and a single-speed freewheel? It doesn't look like I'd be able to squeeze a 3-speed in there because there isn't enough room for a small spacer and the 3-speed looks a lot thicker than a single.

Re:

Back in 1951 I had to use a pre war BSA Opperman special, and had it running 10 speed, can't remember what hub. The 4.5 inch rear width was standard until we started using Italian hubs mid 50s. BH and BW both made gear sided hubs to fit.
The worst problem is the seat stays are usually lower down the fork end.
By economising with the space available, and perhaps using a couple of mm extra it is possible. Find a narrow hub and adjust the axle spacers. Run everything as close as possible, my gear always was set to touch the spokes. Also the gear side spokes will be nearly vertical, so use a strong rim.

Thanks Keith, I love reading about your capers from way back when!

I'm not actually looking to put gears on it, just wondered if I was correct in thinking that it wouldn't have had gears originally. Maybe not with that hub (it's an early 50s one anyway) but perhaps with a paper-thin locknut on the fixed side and a small spacer on the other it would fit a 3-speed freewheel.
