Claud Butler - Carpenter - Vintage Bike - Wheel Help

Well the Mavic rim definitely measures at 630mm 😂 unless of course I have been measuring it wrong which is also a possibility, I've done full diameter to outside of rim? Is there any chance that the grandad would have run a 26" wheel in the front and a 27 at the back? Or is it more likely he...

🤣 I'll call it a dodgy tape measure and try a different when I get a chance.

Woz, I measured all the rims including the Mavic and they all seemed to measure at iso 630 which would indicate 27 1 1/4? I'll have to do a remeasure just in case my brain had a minor lapse of common sense which is quite possible.

For gauging prices for 26" rims what would people suspect the price for 2 rims, and rebuild of wheels on the original hubs? Any example vintage brand/model names to look for on eBay etc?

Claud Butler - Carpenter - Vintage Bike - Wheel Help

It would tie in age wise with his competitive biking career as he won Surrey hill climb when he was 20, and he was nearly 90 when he passed away last year so an approximate 70 year old bike would have been a new bike when he was 20. Now I just need to decide if I drop the rims to 26" or if I...

Claud Butler - Carpenter - Vintage Bike - Wheel Help

Thank you, this community has so far been both incredibly kind and hugely knowledgeable. Hopefully I can do these bikes justice in cleaning them up and making them pieces the family can look at fondly with memories of my wife's grandad. I'm sure I'm going to have plenty more silly...

Lol whilst impressive you'd be willing to go that far, not sure two dismembered fingers would look quite as good as a freshly restored vintage bike That carpenter site looks like it's got loads of great info, although maybe too much for my brain to comprehend tonight haha

Seems I've both managed to get my hands on some quality bikes whilst also being well out of my depth 🤣, is there any resources similar to the Claud butler website but for the carpenters? Or were they so bespoke that a catalogue was not even an option back then?

I don't know if it means anything but on the top of the frame there is also a transfer for the initials B E Norris which is not his initials

When my boys gone to bed I'll attempt to get a few close ups of the transfers and the main badge etc. To be honest the photos you really can't seem much detail on the frames at all. It was why I originally leaned towards the CB because the detailing on the frame was all fine linework which...

Potentially this is just a version of the coronation frame that has over the years had a few changes to it. Looking at some of the photos of the grandad it looks like when he raced he obviously didn't use mudguards, so maybe he adapted the bike to run 27 x 1 1/4 for this purpose although still...

Must admit the only reason I started off more interested in the CB is because i appear to have a photo of my Wife's grandad actually racing on that bike (or at least that's the one it looked like from my pre researched brain) sonas a homage to the family that was the one I was thinking would be...

Haha the username does seem to be the story of my life when it comes to what always starts off as a quick delve into a 'project' whether it be attempting woodwork, to home DIY, to now retro bikes 🤣 Is there a link to the different catalogues available to browse? I couldn't see a way to choose a...

So the mystery continues lol. Tried having a little Google myself but seems people generally struggle to date CB's, I'll have a look at the catalogue you linked.

So your original assumption appears to be spot on with the 26 x 1 1/4 rims being the standard for that frame set. Thank you for finding that so quickly, I'll have to send that on to the family too to give them a bit of a lesson :)

Claud Butler - Carpenter - Vintage Bike - Wheel Help

Not sure if this is it or not? If not when I get a chance I'll try again lol. I did just check the Mavik rim that was referenced, and emasured it still at iso 630mm. I don't appear to have any 26 x 1 1/4 rims to just check clearance. I think again what I find odd is that the rear brake caliper...

Claud Butler - Carpenter - Vintage Bike - Wheel Help

I'll have a look to see what I can find. You'll have to excuse my ignorance but where on the frame would the frame number on these usually be hiding? Lol So my wife's grandad used to compete in hill climb events, his family appear to know almost nothing about his bikes or his career, but he...
