Yet another Pace RC-100 resto...

I decided to use modern rubber as I'll be using the bike on a semi-daily basis. However, these just don't look right to me - what do you think?

XT rear mech en route, I just need some XT pedals and skewers and then I'll have everything.

Is it worth getting a modern chain? If so, what should I go for?

PS - finally getting the frame on Friday, so will post some pics over the weekend.

Finally got the bike home and I've begun stripping it down. It all looks in pretty good shape so far although all of the bolts will need replacing.

One issue so far, how do I remove the steerer? Are the bearing carriers screwed or pressed in - don't want to force it!

Tap gently from below, although not on the threaded bolt, place a large socket set piece over it first then tap

All bearings are standard shimano ones, for that age they will be caged loose balls probably. The lower race is held in by the silver race shim that pace used - don't loose it! The top bearing adjustable race will probably be stuck onto the stem/steerer but will come off with a gentle tap.

Nothing will be screwed in, the top bearing adjustable race has been reamed out so there are no threads in it despite the fact it still has spanner flats on it. Pace invented the aheadset a good couple of years before Diacompe did, although the Pace one was a little more homemade!

Brilliant, knew it had to be simple! The are is now coming out but it's taking some gentle persuasion. Is it safe to use a screwdriver flat to remove the lower race, or is there a better way yo get to the bearings?

I'll hang onto the 517 until I find another 231. It's in such good condition though I may keep it - it depends how fussy I get with the resto!

I ordered a new repro Turbo saddle instead of NOS - is that sacrilege...?

I thought the X517 was a disk specific rim i.e. with no braking surface?
