Work leave notice

If you can start sooner at the new job, just go to the old job's office in the morning with a tin foil hat, muttering incomprehensable words and shouting about how the Roman Empire is about to blow up the Moon. Pretty sure you'll be fired on the spot with no need for 3 more months.

First have a calm talk with your current boss to see how the reality is. It all depends a bit on the situation at your old job. If they feel that they might have a bit too much people employed, they might be quite happy if someone voluntarily leaves.
I am in such a situation. Old company is restructuring so gives incentives to full-timers to quit their job and start somewhere else. Two weeks ago I got wind of a new job and could start there 4 days ago. I informed my boss who directly agreed to give me a full day off for the job interview. I got the job straight away and had a talk with my boss and the manage. No problems, I could leave within a few days even though I had 6 months notice.

i know that approaching it calm in the first place is the best way, but if things get crappy, i'd just like to know where i stand. they aren't unreasonable but im the only person that does my job in my company at the moment (we have someone starting soon that will be helping me, so if i do leave, they wont be completely buggered). but i can just imagine that they'd push to get me staying for my whole 3 month notice period.

im reluctant to reveal my 3 month notice at this interview i have though, as i dont want it to put them off (which it will if im up against someone just as capable as i am, but with no need to serve a notcie period at all)....just want to give myself a fighting chance...

Tell them, but along the line of I am on 3 month but I will endeavor to have it reduced.

3 - 6 month notice period seems crazy to me, at what point does a notice period make it difficult to get another job?

From my experience people don't tend to do much when they are on their way to another job thus the early release.

A lot of the time an employment contract is not worth the paper is it written on, is yours up to date, correct job role/pay etc they would probably find it hard holding you to something that is totally inaccurate.

They are probably hoping you will walk/get fired so that that don't have to pay you for doing nothing for the next 3 months :)

In the jobs with more responsibility it's not about keeping the employee, but more about the employee taking relevant market information and business intelligence to the new employer. Execs will all be on 3 or 6 month notice periods and most of the time will be given gardening leave so anything they knew about the old employer is out of date by the time they start at the new one.

its a completely different job im going for (non office/not even remotely related to my current job).
i've been told to not reveal my notcie period (i.e. tell them it less than it is), which seems like it has the potential to back-fire but at the same time im getting desparate to get out of my current job, so would do/say almost anything to get this job if the opportunity arises...

Recruitment agent? Bad advice, I would ask to speak to his manager dishonest and unprofessional. I would suggest as an approach don't offer the information but when asked be honest but state that you will try and negotiate a reduced period (and cite any examples of colleagues that have also done the same if there are any).

I wouldn't worry about it. Any decent employer will be expecting a notice period and be prepared to wait. I don't think it makes you uncompetitive against the next fella either. Be upfront, it will be fine.

twain, did you sign your contact? I would advise being 100% truthful with your potential new employer but if you have not agreed to your contract by signing it then you don't have a 3 month notice period

Out of interest what is your job role?
