ok so now we are getting somewhere, I think I need a more boutique kinda bike so lay them on me as "ones to look at"

Serotta, DeKerf, Rocky Mountain, Roberts, Bontrager, Amp, LiteSpeed, Merlin, Ritchey just go straight to their top of the range sod the rest, pick your material check if they do custom and ...... etc etc...

It's just a list of names so no point realling them off, we all differ in tastes as you might have noticed.

Having just watched the vid's on YouTube of the '89 UK Mountain Bike Championship linked in another thread it reminded me of just how much it used to be more about the rider than the bike...

...it's very 'subjective' topic, and one that few will agree on ;)

There is a huge amount of brand snobbery.
The smaller the production run, the better the bike.
Also expensive bikes MUST be better than cheap ones. Duh.

..or maybe not?

Ride a few, find out what you like and what suits your riding, and where you live.

Lots of older exotica completely fail in UK mud, as the clearances are inadequate. Point and shoot singletrack rockets are too harsh and twitchy for all day rides. Etc Etc.

Hi, very impressed by the tips, I guess you have realised that my knowledge of mid 90s MTBs is a bit shallow, over half of the makes suggested I have never heard of but happy to be educated, so interesting. So I am going to try to locate a low production company with high spec but I guess that equals rarity!
I need all the help I can get
