Whats Hot? This was the thinking in 1990

Unbelievable. The one item that should be at the top, the single one invention that has effected all our riding experience's HUGLEY, not matter what bike (retro or not!) .. & is STILL in use today, that we take for granted ;

Hyperglide, By Mr Watarai. !

Those rite hite things way ahead of there time what with these new fangled dropper seat posts. I like the idea of the rite hite tho. Stupidly simple one of those why didnt i think of that as long as you have a perfectly smooth seat tube.

some of the leading lights' opinions, especially on headsets and suspension, reek of burying their heads in the sand.

I think that's a little unfair. That's the February 1990 issue, the article was probably actually written in 1989. Suspension then was the first batch of RS-1s, Manitou 1, Flexstem/Proflex, Allsop beam and a handful of weirdy shed experiments. Pretty much everyone was riding around quite happily on rigid bikes. From that perspective most of the comments are pretty sound -- the general thrust seems to be, "interesting but not ready for the mainstream yet".

The only one who was really dismissive was Grant Petersen, and he was pretty retrogrouchy even in 1990 ;)

I liked the fact that one contributor based bike pricing on an average monthly spend spread over two years. And yet here we all are over 20 years later paying daft prices for kit that was advertised in that article (apart from NOS Powerbars)
