Isn't the ultimate bike unobtainable and what you haven't got (yet)?

This is obviously a rhetorical question but for me every time I think "right, that's it" another idea forms in my head - I mean of those mentioned above I've got the Vit T and Yo (2 for goodness sake) but I currently want a steel Stumpjumper (as per my signature - anyone?) and the fact that it appears elusive only wants to make me want it more. Sate that hunger and on I move!

All that said, the one I really wanted BITD and haven't got or had is an RC100

The only thing that would get me back to 26" sized wheels would be a retro project. The only retro project I'd like would be another Bonty.

Why are steel stumpjumpers rare? Explosifs come up all the time, and surely they sold at least as many Stumpjumpers as Explosifs. Do Stumpjumpers rust or something? Surely nobody would just throw one away, so where are they all I wonder?

My other question is if a Yo is more desirable than a Ti Fat, does that mean that we feel that paint is more important than metal? That looks are more important than function?
