What makes you a fan of a certain brand....?

Re:

Kona - First proper MTB I owned, Radically sloping top tube for radically short legs helped make the decision
Specialized - Not sure why really, but I think the FSR Ground control shape has a lot to do with it
Mountain Cycle - If there's a small Moho STS being neglected somewhere I could be tempted

This is a good question and one I have trouble answering. I think for me it is some strange fusion of rarity, cost, ride, builder philosophy, aesthetics, nationalism and craftsmanship. Being Canadian and on the West Coast I have a particular attraction to Rocky Mountain (my first mountain bike), Kona, & Brodie. I even have a soft spot for the lowly Norco. Ritchey's have a certain mystique as well for me (the Ultra may be my unicorn) and I always admired Bridgestone's - something about Grant Pederson's wonderful catalogues and independence. I also like the early 90's KHS's - probably because of the one that got away phenomenon.

Yeti's and Fat Chance's were oh so cool too in the early days - probably because of their rarity.

I could never get into GT's, Diamondbacks, Marin's. I bought a Specialized and regretted it mightily.

I'm with you on the Bridgestones, Ritcheys and I know what you mean about the early 90s Norcos. I'd love a 93 Rampage or TNT.

My favourite line is Bianchi - they lugged their bikes later than most, used exotic Italian steel, focussed on hybrids and produced an early 29" mountain bike. I also love the colour celeste.

Favourite parts brand - Nitto

I had a 93 or 94 pass through my hands. Beautiful handling bike. Too small for me so I passed it on.
