What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

That poor mech...the amount of strain that's going on there. This also confirms a bent mech hanger.
Why strain? On big-big the chain is still rather loose as I can put my finger down and it bends easily. The newer drivetrains the mech can look much more strangled than seen in those pics. I have seen them almost horizontal in big cog sometimes.

I know the hanger looks bent on some images but on the latter ones I think it looks straight.

Anyway I will try and make a tool to see more scientifically.

This takes less than 5 minutes, admire my Karakoram if you wish.
Remove rear wheel, skewer and mech.
Rip piece of card off cereal box. I've used Shreddies. Trace r/h dropout onto card. Attach to l/h dropout.

Screw axle into mech hanger from behind. Putting the wheel the wrong way gives you something to put fingers/spanner on.

Push skewer in.

Look where skewer touches card. Bulls eye!

A quick bonus photo, probably should be in the same colour thread.
