What is so special with the Syncros seatpost?

I still remember very well back in the early to mid 90's what brands and equipment that were more popular than others.

Names that comes to mind: Ringlé, Chris King, Mavic, Cook Bros, Control Tech, Magura, Paul ...and many others of course.

Some of the equipment was of superior quality and that was the reason for their popularity. Other stuff were just cool and expensive.

What you chose to use on your bike was based on your own premises and that's why we all had different stuff on our bikes.

But, there was one item in particular that everyone had to have. An item that was more cool than anything else..... the Syncros seat post.

...looking at all the top end bikes in here, it seems that this still is the rule: A black Syncros seat post is above all other alternatives.

I have actually never owned one of these myself so I wonder....why is it like this? Is it because it's a high quality item? If so...how? I mean it's a seat post....

....or is it just because it's the coolest alternative? If so, what makes it so? It surely don't look like the coolest thing.

Anyone have an idea.....?

adds 3mph to any ride ;) i havnt a clue the fad about fancy seat post, only fancy one i would like to try is a dropper post

I think it all started with the fact that Syncros were one of the first companies to offer seat-posts that were extra long and in odd diameters too, which made them quite popular with the aftermarket crowd. On top of everything they are reasonably light and quite durable, and above all, they just simply look cool. As you can tell by my Avatar I'm quite biased though. Their other stuff like stems and cranks are quite awesome too! I've owned quite a few of their products over the years and I never had any trouble with them. That being said I'm only referring to the original "Made in Canada, Eh!" products, not the generic Taiwan crap that's sold under the Syncros name nowadays.
Bottom line it's a mixture of cool and it delivers function to back it up.

without the syncros seatpost, the moon would fall from the sky, it's that cool

Having 'Syncros' written large near the sphincter enthuses the rider with confidence that he is instantly cooler than the guy with the Kalloy post.

*I think all my posts are Kalloy...

have you not seen this pic.........?! :D

reasonably light, pretty tough, but the thing that did it for me was the decent clamp, micro adjustable 2-bolt design*, none of that serrated nonsense!

* obviously others were/are available that have the same or similar but apart from Thomson there were few that had the same mix of weight strength, good looks, decent clamp and availability in funny sizes.

Not sure about other places, but here at the end of the Eighties, mountainbike frames were fit according to roadbike standards. So big frames and short seatposts and stems. Then in the beginning of the Nineties, we suddenly started to buy ultra small frames, fitted with 400mm seatposts and 150mm stems. Syncros was one of the first to offer an ultra long seatpost that looked uber cool and functioned fantastically.
