For me it is rideability. I have 20 retro builds and my promise is to either ride them regularly or part them out. So, I pick my build parts based on what I think will make the bike most fun to ride.
I don't have many in my fleet that are true retro builds. They are mix of old (late '80's early '90's)frames and newer, mid 90's components.
