vitus info

hello
i'm new here
was at my lbs today and in the trad-in rank was a vitus
blue and polished ali lugged
some campag parts and ergo shifters
steel forks and mis-matched wheels
so i asked and the shop owner (my mate) said it had been built as a winter
hack by the saturday boys dad ,a new b/b block and chain
mine for a ton

probably going to buy it ,but what do you think ?

i dont normally do road bikes but macretro are doing some road stuff
next year and i might start commuting on it
worthwhile and retro ?

A steel fork for you say. Probably the original one was broken at some point. I hope it was not painfully discovered during a ride downhill or halfway a crossing.

Vitus are bonded aluminium rather like Alan. I don't know for sure but Alan tubes are also screwed into the lugs. I can vouch for the ride of my Alan. Nice and springy but in a good way. Make sure there is no movement in any of the lugs when gently flexed.

The Campagnolo stuff should work fine. Are the brakes dual pivot? If not you will certainly notice the difference with your MTB!

The most important measurement on a road bike is length. As a rule of thumb if you sit on the saddle with you hands on the hoods and look down, you shouldn't be able to see the front hub.

A ton sound reasonable to me.

ALAN ,if you look in the b/b shell or headtube you can see or at least feel
the threaded sections ,i have an ALAN built mtb

later model with 'normal' seatpost clamp (seatpost is 25mm)

earlier models have a grub screw to secure the post

ride is stiffer than and better than I was lead to believe - I've wanted one for a long time and now its here I could do with a slightly bigger frame.

I had always heard that the Vitus frames with the Grub screw were the later frames and the ones with the standard type of seatpost clamp were the earlier models? So which is it?
