Virgin media

Been a VM customer for years service and that i think is great wont get amny faster in terms of BB service thats fairly obvious i do know that this weekend they been changing some stuff around to prevent anyone with dodgey modems and television using service my only bug bear with them is the customer support is crap always has been and probably always will be but when its working fine then never an issue.

good for news and info on most things bb and also has a few speed tests you can use

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/

Also if you got a superhub read this explains why some having issues with them and will also speed up if you disable the routers firewall and a few other services main issue with that is obviously you need to enable your firewalled with somehing on computer or another router.

I have the superhub but only use it as modem and not the wifi part of it as prior to getting the 50mb i had my own router and couldnt be bothered redoing all my security on the new one as it would take me half a day to configure it up

My mate swears by bethere broadband - I swear by Virgin media.....

Do you have a router? Apparently, if you know how, the Virgin media firmware on them can be shoddy and effect speeds - and a flash of the firmware can help.

Other than that - I recommend speaking to someone in the UK about this who can resolve it. Unfortunately I don't know what the magic combination of options is to get to speak to someone without a flowchart. You should have reliable broadband from Virgin, if it is not then they need to sort out your hardware or line.

i also swear by bethere, other than the crappy modem/routers they supply you with there service so far has been faultless. (been with them for 3-4 years now)

your broadband will not change in 'quality' no matter what provider - it still has to come via an exchange and down a telephone wire. Dodgy hardware like old copper cables does broadband no favours.

The further you are from your local exchange, the lower the broadband.

Virgin media gets around this by using the old cable TV fibre optic networks (along with BT who are upgrading).

I'm 3 miles from 30 meg broadband cabled areas and can only get 0.9 at best.

I recently switch to PlusNet could not have been easyer and answered any and all of my questions, I fyou are interested in swaping let me know I think I can give you a code to get £10 off and I get £10 aff as well so cant be bad.

as much as wed like to change, i dont think we can get out of our virgin just yet without paying fees :(

we dont have the superhub, we have the modem(router? whats the difference) which is normally standard from virgin and then a d link dir 615 for wireless

with regards to the speed, it only drops to unusable around 6.30-7pm
not sure when it comes back again, maybe around 1-2am

but during the day, with the good speed i was at times getting 11mb equivalent speed
so its not all bad. just at 'peak times'

(we pay £25 a month for 10mb speed)

lgf - your distance/speed ratio is ludicrous!

Sounds like possible falling foul of their throttling policy.

Do you download sizeable amounts between around 10-ish (AM) 10-ish PM?

erm, sometimes, depends what is considered sizable amounts?

oh and if they are throttling it too much, then i havent been told about it (but i suspect its in the small print)

I'm on VM, they do two type of throttling the normal - after 3.0gb they knock you down to 1/4 speed. This can happen twice a day though eg: a day limit and evening limit so 6gb in total.

However after 4pm they lock down Newsgroups almost completely so downloading from them is a no. (unless you use proxies like VyprVPN). Other browsing and streaming works Ok
