Today's Ride

One of the best bits about messing about with old bikes is that first ride on a new build. Today's ride was a test ride of a build I completed this morning...taken a while this one, mainly trying to track down the right stem...Ride was local, a 7km circuit... in case I have to walk back home at any point 😂

A road ride today—I seem to be doing more and more road riding—but I needed to conserve some energy for an afternoon of childminding, so not too far: about 30 miles. Still, it was a pleasant day, pleasant countryside, and with pleasantly little traffic on the roads.

I stopped for a drink at a favourite hamlet and, lo and behold, an older gentleman (He said his children are in their sixties, so I guess he's in his eighties.) pulled up on a 1990s' carbon-bonded Specialized Allez Epic, clad in Campy this, that and the other. I commented on what a nice bike it was and he said he prefers titanium and his latest bike is an Enigma! After a pleasant little chat about bikes, and a rather sad chat about dementia, we went our separate ways. I always like seeing senior riders enjoying their rides though; that little chat was the highlight of my day.

50 mile loop to visit the epic Rudston standing stone. Some nice old Roman road now green lane/bridleway (although lots of it unkempt and big RD pressed into gardening duties …) Refilled our water bottles in the “Gypsy Race”: gorgeous chalk stream that mysteriously disappears underground in dry years (flowing fast and full this year).

Nice one!
I did the same yesterday. I love a set of new tires but they are still so sticky that I got bombarded with dust and gravel everytime I left the asphalt, most of it ended up in my shoes....
