Today's Ride

After some tweaking, re-greasing and servicing, I took the new-to-me Crossroads out for test riding today. The jury's still out on whether this one will stay in the fold. There's nothing wrong with it, but whether it's the right bike for the niche I have for it is not yet decided. All the same, trying it out is satisfying my curiosity. And the Panaracer GravelKings definitely get a thumbs up.

The weather was sunny but there was a strong, wintry wind blowing in from a north-easterly direction and, despite daffodils and blossom, it felt more like the last gasps of winter than the start of spring. The sunshine was welcome but so was my windproof jacket. Good to get the legs, lungs and blood pumping though, and the sunshine lent a cheerfulness to everything that I really enjoyed.

Yesterday evening, said it felt like 7, more like 5. Southerly breeze didn't bring any notable warmth, but it's always a good day when you're on the bike.

Just off the top of Sancreed, I like seeing the road wind back up in the distance before the drop back down towards HQ.

Today's ride had a practical purpose: yesterday I took the dog out in the old wagon so he could have a run on a nearby dirt road and we ran out of petrol at the furthest point from home. The fuel gauge doesn't work -- apparently it's a known fault in this model -- but I thought I had a bit more in there.

So we had a long walk home yesterday; I took a can of petrol out in my wife's car last night and filled it up but she wasn't available to drive me out again this morning so I took the Explosif. All in a long walk is a short ride; luckily I could stick the bike in the back and bring it back with me.

And the dog got to stay home.

Overnight bikepacking trip. Testing the bike and kit out. Cycled 38km mostly off-road to a small basic camping site.

WNW 14-19mph breeze. Felt like 4 rising a touch when the sun came out. Damp but not soggy. High cloud that started to break, a really good morning for it. I saw next to no-one and it was perfect up on the moor. My go-to loop came up trumps.

Spotted and chatted with the ponies and the moon was looking good over Pendeen lighthouse.
