Today's Ride

Yes, it's steep already at the bottom and from there just getting steeper and steeper and very windy most of the time too. On my first ascent I got blown off my bike near the top so had to stop and then roll down half way to the bottom. The last half is so steep there's no chance to get going again if you stop. Unless you wanna walk of course, but that woulda been cheating...

... and it's too steep to walk in cleats too anyway.

Re:

todays ride for me was short, sweet and made me smile. ventured not too far from home at all, visited a local wood/forest that us locals usually neglect as it is a bit..........well, lame? some would say. not technical, not hilly but pleasant to ride and to my surprise fairly dry too. had planned a day out with a good mate but the beer consumed last night messed that up for him today, so ventured out in the bus on my own. had some nice time to think and ponder and also to discover that after a year, 10 speed chains and chainrings dont last......... cruised in granny ring using ALOT of the lower cassette

not epic, not memorable....much, but chuffed i actually got out this weekend

sorry its not retro.........couldnt bare to get the mongoose dirty haha

Re:

With Saturday being glorious, and I had to work, we decided to ride on Sunday. I was going to be on my Quantum, whilst my GF was on her Merlin. It was pretty grey as we rode through Richmond Park and out Cancellara gate. Normally, we swing left and head towards Bushey Park, but this time, with many left rights, left rights we were soon past Heathrow and into Buckinghamshire. After riding loads in Surrey and Kent, even though the ride wasn't hilly, the roads were super smooth

It rained a little, and as we came into Marlow, the sun was out, a little cold, but still very nice. We didn't stop, straight over the bridge and headed for the Quarry Wood climb, where the views from the top are awesome. I would like to say that this climb was great, but the road was wet and some idiot had dumped oil or diesel up the whole climb. I've ridden on ice but this was worse, my gf wanted to jump off near the top, but she stayed on and gingerly took it around the corner. Once she was happy that there was no more oil build up on the tyres, off she powered again.

Cookham had a nice Christmas fair going on, so we walked through the middle. Next up was Maidstone, quickly followed by Eton, and then we pulled in at Windsor for a coffee stop.

Back on the road, we headed for Didcot, Staines and Laleham, a traditional route for us, and as we neared Shepperton, something happened, we were on a flat, doing minimum 35ks, I was following, and my front just went, and all I could feel was face eating road !!! I came to a stop, I was pulled off the road and I sat there, many people around me, I could sense some blood, a bit of skin, I was concerned about my bike. A local took both of our bikes and locked them in her garage, whilst another lady drove us to the local hospital. They took me straight in but they told me I had ripped my eye lid off, and as they were not an eyes hospital, I would have to go to Guilford Hospital.

Once there, they pumped me full of morphine, morphine is a good pain killer !!! And then they started cleaning and stitching away. They got the dirt out, and started to pull the eye lid in place. It was horrific, but they did a good job.

Overnighted at the hospital before another specialist checked me out. He said, if it wasn't for your glasses, you would have lost the eye

OMG! I wish my GF could do rides like this. Hope you get well soon with no further complications. With a GF like your's you will be out riding again soon. At least I would... :D

Longun what bike is it? Always good to make the effort and ride especially when mates bail.

Davroos that eyelid story is horrific. Hope you are on the mend. Did you have a tyre blowout then?
