Titanium Raleigh Frame

Retro Newbie
Hi Guys and girls,
Im looking for some help and came across your forum.
Two years ago or more I bought a second hand Raleigh MTB with a titanium frame, I was stoked and rode it for about a month before the downtube pulled out of the head stock (excuse some of the terminology), cant weld it, tried gluing it, raleigh rep said no good you tried to glue it yada yada...
So it set my mtb'ing back 2 years.
Now im so eager to get going but I want to use all the bits on the bike and I need help.
All the frame says is its a 2125 titanium frame, (its a gun metal grey),
Has 21R rock shox which need a rebuild kit,
Shimano Deore XT brakes and gears,
I would like to get a nice light frame, aluminium I suppose and be able to swap everything straight over but it would need to take a 1" steerer to do a straight swap.
I would really appreciate any advice.

Steve

Hmmm, that's some tough luck on the frame. Perhaps there are people on the forum that know more about bonding the tubes back together..

thanks for that but I dont think it can be done..dont want to ditch the bike because most of the gear on it is pretty good

Sounds as though you would need to buy an older frame or a new frame with a devolution type headset that takes 1 1/8th down to 1". Alternatively keep most your stuff and just grab some 1 1/8th forks to fit.

To be honest though I would phone around a few frame builders and ask the possibility of re-bonding your current frame.

Unless you love the frame I would scrap it, head tube failure is never gonna be pretty. You'll get something easily enough, my stumpjumper in my signature is 1 1/8" shimmed to accept 1" stuff easy done.

Simple -ditch the frame -keep the parts :D

The bonded dynatechs come up on ebay every month or so and sell for between £30-70
I had the Raleigh dynatech diablo that also had bonded tubes, and was told by all that if the tube debonds ,thats it, frames a bad un.
Cut off the Ti tubes[why not  ]keep them and cut them up into pencil holders or something like that
There is another raleigh that used full Ti tubes welded in the proper plasma fashion it is called the Torus and came out between '94-'99
Nice frame[ :D i've got one]

Keep an eye on the classifieds theres ALWAYS cool frames for sale in there
I think theres an unwritten rule here - newbies must build a bike to prove their worth ;)

It can be repaired. Take it to an engineering company at a local airfield. They can bond it back with the stuff they use on aircraft. It'll be good as new.

There was nothing inherently wrong with the bonding technology, just that Raleigh used too little glue on some batches [apparently], so I don't see why it can't be repaired.. Because of a few examples that failed, these frames have had a bad rap, but most were ok I think, and they rode quite nicely. The worst thing about them was the cheaper 'commercially-pure' seamed ti tubing, I'd say..
There's a guy on this site who used to work for Ralegh, he might know about possible repairs.

Hi

Sorry to hear youf frame came un bonded

I have a virtually new old stock....it was built up NOS and ridden a couple of times... Raleigh Dyna-Tech 2125 MT3 frame and forks in 17" size.

I was just about to advertise it as I also have an MT4 and an early 2070 frame too.

If you are interested, let me know, I was going to advertise it for £120 [frame and forks]

Cheers,

Chaser

Thanks for all your emails.
Totally understand with the build your own bike newby comment and I bow down in awe at your collective greatness so that I can stay and ask questions... ; )
Its funny I was one of the first kitesurfers in Ireland and have said similar to newbies on kitesurfing forums and now Im the newbie ; )

What kind of shims do you use to fit the 1" headset into the 1 1/8th" ?
Is it worth rebuilding the old rock shox, I know they have very little travel in them, probably only 2", and I know when I get going I will will be going hard on the downhill sections...

That frame sounds interesting, any pictures? what kind of shocks?
