Time to move the Retro bar up a bit ... maybe to 2000+?

I think any form of media, an internet site, forum whatever needs to evolve, and unfortunately retrobike hasn't done this, it requires a few tweeks, like pictures being easy to upload etc.. its a great site, and i will happyly continue to support it, but old father time is catching up, it needs to progress.

I like the decade idea, or even just moving 97 to 2000, then something for the 2000's and then post 2010 for new stuff...[edit]-oh yeah, um thats pretty mcuh decades, so yeah decades :)
while agree that the forum software needs updating, I actually like this "style" of software, pretty much everyone knows how it works and looks... I've been on a number of forums that in the last 5 years did an update to some new fancy software, yeah they were on a decline already, but after the update, they pretty much died overnight.

What do you mean by this?

My thoughts are to make it a recognised standard. Say for example, any bike over 20yrs old achieves retro status.

Using guitars as an example again, throughout the industry guitars over a certain age are regarded and referred too as vintage. There are sites and other resources you can go too which support this along with the industry itself.

Now, if we spread the word through media and companies that a certain age is recognised as retro then maybe the retro ideal could be set permantly into cycling. Im sure there are people on here who have contacts in the various cycling circles to suggest this.

What then? well, anyone who needs info on their now retrobike will most likely find their way to Retrobike, the oldest and most comprehensive resource on the subject. And im sure it will lead to other sites popping up in the future too.

I feel this is something that the people on this forum who obviously have a real passion for this, should act upon and set the foundations for the future.

And personally i think that FB and other sites are a positive. Granted, and going by what others say, they may not be as informed, but for them to be there shows interest in the subject and while some say this site is suffering as a result, i personaly doubt that member on here would give up this wealth of retroness for some new takes on the subject.

Make people aware of the subject itself and they will come to this site eventually, as its the foremost site on the subject.

I like the sound of this idea so make groups of.....

More than 20 years and Less than 20 years

Makes sense and doesn't need changing all the time......

My only input is that I find it differcult to post pics on here so I don’t bother. Pics generate interest and discussion so if possible it would be nice to see a upgrade.

Anything over 2000 I class as modern as that’s when a lot of the bikes changed quickly in tech. My STS Lobo, and spooky is just as retro as my 97 zaskar to me but on the forum would need to be in different sections as they 98/99 era.

my opinions, take it as you will

drag and drop picture uploads
bin the off topic section or have stricter rules??? too much trolling imho
condense the regional sections until it gets busy again or just see if it gets busier...
change the mtb timeline into decades
one area for sales for each discipline, but make sure there is a retro or modern tag
donation link for running the website, similar to house-mixes.com
have a retrobike rides gathering
organise purchasing retrobike clothing via a company that can produce, stock limited runs etc

prob more if i took my time, love this place, just needs tweeking

I think if it's going to work it needs fixed time periods, rolling periods would mean stuff shifting between periods

a bit like BMX do maybe

the old school (the current pre 98 section)
The mid school (98-2004 or so)

and in a while the <as yet unnamed> school (2004-2012?)

But people who're interested in the "mid school" stuff have been quietly pushed away from here (not in any deliberate fashion, just wasn't very welcoming to them) over the years, and it may well be too late to get them back

But I don't think the cut-off points are the reason. The post 98 section could be buzzing with downhill bikes and the like but it's just not.

The biggest problem is (ironically) out of date technology. Young people don't use forums. Loads of folk don't use computers. It's all mobile devices and aps and platforms that make it really easy for people to take a snapshot and post it, and react to things. Writing out a massive thread with detailed pictures of a resto is just something that too many people can't be arsed with nowadays. Look at how much activity there is in the facebook groups. Probably loads on instagram and snapchat and whatever else is 'current'. But that stuff is all much more fleeting and transient than this place. The conversations on facebook are comic, and the lack of genuine knowledge is frightening sometimes.

I think there is still a place for forums These are long term resources. Other media is or can be very fickle. FB demographic is 30's plus, not the youngsters it once was they have moved on.

What it needs is a mobile platform option. Many of the other forums I frequent have these.

Furthermore what are dealing with is history and that is usually something that becomes of interest to those later in life. I hold auctions of toys, models, train-sets etc etc we have all the technology, but the demographic really doesn't change and out website is what is used to view, not Instagram etc. However what is fashionable and popular does, but ages not....35 upwards. I think MTBs are similar in may ways.

I do think there is a need for a refresh. Photos are an issue, but they take up a lot of space and bandwidth which costs money. Does the site make enough? The issues with Photobucket etc have not helped forums and I suspect it is likely to get worse as Flickr etc start to look at charging.

Sections within the hobby all good - as long as we have them under the banner of retro.

More sections of this forum will hammer another nail in its demise. No one will go to them.

Include more people - just make the place inclusive to people with bikes and kit up to at least 2000.
Allow this to continue to grow as a resource for the newbies and vets - that comes with more members and active members
Make some changes to the functionality of the forum. This is probably very overdue.

If this site modernizes a bit it can remain relevant wi FB and IG. I'm about as active as it gets on IG (I'm classic_mtbs to those that don't know) and it's all simple show and tell on social media - this is the place for real info. It's an actual resource.
