Time to move the Retro bar up a bit ... maybe to 2000+?

The post 98 section isn't totally dead but definitely on life support. I'm working on a 99 Marin Team Marin over there. That bike would be right at home in the pre 97 section because it's the same basic technology. Adjusting dates according to decade isn't a bad idea as there are early adopters of technology and that factor isn't really the most decisive factor.

I don't know if I would agree with statement it ain't broke. I am surely not going to say its broken, but the decline on here has been steady. I don't think anyone can argue with that.

This is the most valuable retro resource on the web. We need it.

A resource is only as useful as the information being added to it though.

Agreed, but as the format currently stands, the information to add has pretty much been exhausted. A good thing for the history of the bikes from this era :) and more of a reason to preserve it.

Yes, i know the '98+ section covers all the other bikes but i think it is too vague. If the status of retro advanced and was universaly recognised, then this would also preserve the interest and foundations of what excists now.

As i have mentioned before, Guitars are a classic example. After 25yrs a guitar becomes vintage, it aquires a status and becomes desirable, more so obviously if it is of quality, not just made by halfords, for exampe  which in turn makes people curious about even older guitars, and so the history and passion for old quality guitars is preserved.

I think this is something we need to address now and make it official and recognised universaly.

Re:

Without any of the people who have the ability to change retrobike engaging in the discussion these threads are pointless unfortunately.

I dont spend a lot of time here anymore , but for me the bikes I enjoy are pre 1995 . 1998 would be my limit . hence why i like the current set up .

If it ain't broke....

It is kinda broke though.

But I don't think the cut-off points are the reason. The post 98 section could be buzzing with downhill bikes and the like but it's just not.

The biggest problem is (ironically) out of date technology. Young people don't use forums. Loads of folk don't use computers. It's all mobile devices and aps and platforms that make it really easy for people to take a snapshot and post it, and react to things. Writing out a massive thread with detailed pictures of a resto is just something that too many people can't be arsed with nowadays. Look at how much activity there is in the facebook groups. Probably loads on instagram and snapchat and whatever else is 'current'. But that stuff is all much more fleeting and transient than this place. The conversations on facebook are comic, and the lack of genuine knowledge is frightening sometimes.
Retrobike is a great resource but it is becoming more of an archive of past glories now. If it is to be current again it would need a big change, but then we don't need another facebook, so I'm not sure it would be an improvement I'd want to see.
It would be better if John was still keen as mustard, and it would be better if photobucket hadn't committed harikari and decimated many great threads, but things change. An update to the forum to include photo hosting and more features would probably take a large investment of time, effort and money. And then folk would complain they didn't like the changes. I can understand why John would be reluctant!

So to summarise, I don't really know what the answer is. I'm not sure there is one but it does make me a little sad that this place is in decline.

Fire has it. Us miserable old buggers like this format and have no interest in facebooking everything or instagramming. Problem is, everyone else is. :|

You know what, retrobike is what it is. If that is out of date I that suits us, we cling to the past.

if you think it's fun by all means play the young ones game
but you'll probably have to work hard and still never going to beat them

no.. one should know his value... and there's tons of that here :)
and when he does, he'll beam and the mayflies will come swarming

patience :)
