Re:

I have a TD5 Discovery at the moment and use it for towing a horse box and a Caravan although not at the same time !
For everyday use 55,000 miles per year type of use I have a BMW 118d
It is an excellent car except in the ice and snow.
I never buy new always a year old cant understand the logic of buying a new car when they depreciate so much off the forecourt.
I guess its an unusual mix but my uses are at both ends of the scale.

2.0 Litre TD4 Diesel (180hp) Automatic 44.8 60.1 53.3 139

Those are figures from the current PSA sourced Discovery Sport.

My neighbour has never bettered 31mpg at best
And? Unless your neighbour drives exactly as per the test cycle that the cars are approved and certified at, they never will meet the stated figures. No one will.

If however you have a driving style and your most usual drive/commute is less arduous than the test cycle, you can easily exceed the stated figures.

FWIW, in my last three cars, over 7 years I've exceeded the stated mpg figures consistently, as my main route/timing is 50 miles of essentially empty motorway, so once I'm rolling, I rarely need to brake, or accelerate.

My record is less than 30 gear changes, and four applications of the brake pedal. Two to get out of our village, two to get into the parking space at work. (Got to do something to break the monotony)

When I lived in the UK, I was usually 10-15% down. As the roads are generally crowded and badly laid out.

50 miles of empty motorway? Didn't know there was such a thing these days!

Its a big motorway for the volume of traffic at the times i travel. It helps that the main business that the motorway was built to support went bankrupt 3 years ago...........

Please can someone explain the Euro 5 and 6 standards to me because I find them rather confusing. From the info I've read it seems that all new cars must meet these standards, Euro 6 as of september 1st this year. The Euro 5 and 6 standards state 1g/km of CO2 for a petrol car and 0.5g/km for diesel.

Those numbers are for CO, not CO2.

So they are, stupid me  , makes more sense now. How do the CO2 limits work then?

I reckon we ought to be thankful this has happened, could be a lot of cheap VWs knocking about soon!

Good point! I'd now quite like a VW van to get my tat to regional rides/races
