A lot of hyperbole does not even come close. Don't believe all that you read in the press.
 
The only surprise here is that nobody else has been caught fixing emissions yet.
If VAG have to fix the software to achieve the required levels then how could any other manufacturer achieve them without doing something similar. VAG don't build fundamentally poor engines by industry standards.
