Thick thin chainrings?

I'm currently gathering parts for my first 29er and I'm likely to go 1 x 10, so I thought I'd ask if anyone is using thick thin chainrings.

If so, what's good? And what's worth avoiding?

Heard good things about the Wolftooth and the Raceface - haven't used either though. Are you going SRAM or Shimano?

spoilt for choice the amount of companys now making them, e13, hope, absolute black etc. so far the hope 1 is holding out okay. is has threads into the actual chainring, so you only need a chainring bolt to attach to a crank (IE not conventional nut & bolt)

Re:

Rod.

SRAM.

I was looking at both.

Scant.

That's why I asked, as a quick search shows prices for £16 to £60 and I want to know if I can be a cheapskate, or would I be better off spending a little / lot more.

I honestly think chain retention is down more to the rear derailleur, IE shimano clutch is IMHO better than the sram version (i've got a short cage x9 type2 rear mech for sale if you want one). chainring itself is more about weight/quality of finish

From what research I've done, it seems to be a combination of the two.
I certainly wouldn't expect just the narrow/wide chainring to do the job on its own

i have plenty of friends around here running just clutch mechs with standard unramped rings & they're not dropping chains & its pretty rough trails around here. put it this way if you ride a rough downhill & forget to turn the clutch "on" even with a narrow/wide chainring you'll still drop a chain.

Jeez, just when I think I am getting into a modern build, I come across clutch mechs, thick/thin rings. Not wanting to digress too much, but what are these new fangled things and do I need any of them?
