Thick thin chainrings?

do I need any of them?

No, don't worry about it, go back to polishing your velocipede. :p
But I'm trying hard to get with the times. I guess I missed out by last spending big on XTR M970 and XT M770 when they were actually new, and not really felt that I have missed anything. Am I missing something, or should I stay in the dark ages?

Also, on another level, I do like to stay in touch and be knowledgeable about things, even if they don't adorn anything I own :)

Re:

I've recently gone 1x10 on my newish full-suss.
SLX clutch rear mech, and a Works Components N-W ring.
In the interests of science* I've tried different combos to see what happens.

1) Old single ring + 9spd rear mech and block + upper chain device = chain comes off occasionally at the bottom, and may jam in the chain device.

2) Old single ring + 9spd rear mech and block + no chain device = chain comes off on most downhills.

3) New N-W ring + 9spd rear mech and block + no chain device = chain stays on most of the time, came off once or twice per ride.

4) New N-W ring + 10spd clutch rear mech and block + no chain device - clutch turned off = chain stayed on apart from one drop on a really rooty downhill.

5) New N-W ring + 10spd clutch rear mech and block + no chain device - clutch turned on = chain has not dropped once, even on the downhill trails at Triscombe. Noticeably quieter, i.e. no chain slap.

So, overall.....a N-W ring on its own works pretty well, but the best results (for me anyway) are from the N-W/clutch mech combo.

*may not actually meet the criteria of a proper scientific experiment.

Re:

Thanks Tom.

The plan is / was to use a 10 speed rear mech I already have and NW chainring on an S1000 crankset, so I think I'll be OK.

Re:

Friend of mine is running a 34t RaceFace thick/thin with bashguard and a short cage Shimano Zee clutch mech. He really throws his bike around and has not dropped chain once. Sounds good to me :D

Re:

I've ordered a 30t Blackspire, so we'll see how I get on with a standard rear mech.

No rush on the build, as I spent the wheel money on something else (bike related).

Re:

I ran just the clutch and a non ramped ring and dropped the chain quite a few times. Switched to a Race Face thick thin and not a chain dropped since. Been a year now with the RF ring and ridden Scotland, Italy and the Lakes.

Re:

I have been using nw rings on some very rocky trails for the past year. Not one dropped chain. I have used one on my cross bike with a non clutch (campag) rear mech and it has been great. I used a clutch mech with an unramped - not nw - middleburn ring on the black run at llandegla and around the Marin trail and dropped the chain a couple of times.

The nw rings really do work, and maybe work better than a clutch mech on it's own - but used together there is no need for any kind if chain device unless you're racing DH. My only very slight negative comment is that it seems the drive chain feels a bit more draggy, but I guess that inevitable if something is designed to grip your chain.

For what it's worth I have used Works, Race Face and Blackspire nw rings.

My Race Face N/W ring has been great in almost a year of use; works just as well n the slop. I e dropped two chains, both in the same spot at BPW after I'd broken the bible ferrel in the rear mech. On the big G out the mech went slack and came off.

The Shimano clutch mechs are bit quieter than Sram. My main bike has an X9 mech and I do get some mech slap in the rough stuff whereas the Zee mech on the Stanton doesn't make ant noise.
