The *NOT BORING!* Hi-Fi faff chat and sales

Re:

Those guys are ludicrous! Selling valve amps from a crappy unit with an old escort van outside? Not a great image, especially when you start an auction at a few hundred quid with a mortgage sized BiN price. Fools...

The brass plaque sounds better... ;)

Haha

I had a cd63 before I had it , can't really tell the difference in sound though ? The KI is heavier that's for sure.

I wouldn't have bought it except that it was dirt dirt cheap ( chap who was selling didn't know what it was , so I took advantage a little bit )

So... Is it in the post yet??

Yeah, you've got to listen real hard to hear any difference in the KI. The guy 'Wishywashy' or whatever his name is, is practically a legend on the likes of DIY Audio.com but he's barely done anything over the bog standard version - not stuff that should count a whole lot in my opinion anyway. My very modified bog standard version sounds more forward and exciting than the KI version, but then, I've made drastic electronic changes, not just added a copper chassis and extra metal.

As long as you remember Audiophiles are gullible, you'll be able to sell 'weight' and unobtanium by the truckload :)

Re: The *NOT BORING!* Hi-Fi faff and sales: Amps amps amps!!!

To be fair, damping the mechanism does do stuff - what, I can no longer remember, but it was very important for video with audio benefiting as a bonus.

Re: The *NOT BORING!* Hi-Fi faff and sales: Amps amps amps!!!

He's not done any mech damping, and in fact still uses the cheap and cheerful CDM12. He's just put it in a heavier case, which I accept will damp external noise - albeit slightly, but the vibration from the mech itself won't be affected (it still vibrates like all CDM12s). A stable drive is going to be more important for video because of the sheer amount of data involved and the reduction in error correction required. I remain to be convinced about super-heavy chassis having an appreciable effect on audio though, and expect it is largely placebo given that we tend to at least initially judge quality by weight in audio.

^^ What are the better CD drives to look for when bargain hunting older/first generation CD players??
