The *NOT BORING!* Hi-Fi faff chat and sales

Re: The *NOT BORING!* Hi-Fi faff and sales thread

The Marantz CD67... mine mistracks slightly until it's been on a few minutes. I'm probably just going to swap out the laser mech (or leave it on!) Around £15 on eBay. It's getting round to it as I'm fixing stuff for others all the time!

The slide mechanism could be gummed up as the lube attracts crap over the years. Access is easy on the 4x, 5x and 6x series if you feel like having a go yourself. I can give you pointers if you need them, and a service manual is available on www.hifiengine.com

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on my CD player issues apache.
It has now stopped recognising CD's at all, and instead is making a clunking noise and a slight movement on the left hand side of the closed CD drawer for a second or two when a disc is inserted. So I think a bit of a clean may be in order.

Re: The *NOT BORING!* Hi-Fi faff and sales thread

Why do/or should active speakers/monitors such as the Yamaha and the Numark pairs I have make such an intrusive hissing noise when music isn't playing? What do I ask/look for to get a pair of active monitors (for close to Mac work) that are truly quiet?

Re: The *NOT BORING!* Hi-Fi faff and sales thread

Do they still make a noise when not connected to the source? Sound cards aren't that quiet unless yours is an expensive audio specific type. Could also just be radiated noise from your PC getting in to the amps in the speakers.

Re: The *NOT BORING!* Hi-Fi faff and sales thread

something missing there then as I have my Tivoli system connected to the PC and the hiss is only noticeable at full volume.

Off-board sound card? Maybe?

Re: The *NOT BORING!* Hi-Fi faff and sales thread

You're not running the speakers at full gain (volume all the way up) and controlling the volume via your Mac are you? That'll do it...

Re: The *NOT BORING!* Hi-Fi faff and sales thread

sounds like the Macs' own sound card. My PC is built from non standard bits found down the tip so by chance the soundcard is pretty decent. Whereas my laptop was awful.

Re: The *NOT BORING!* Hi-Fi faff and sales thread

Here is one for the hifi repair experts.

Have an old sony mini system trying to press into action for the kids. When first retrieved from storage wouldn't read any discs, giving a NO DISC error. Took the cover off and spent an age adjusting the pot on the Sony Kss210A pickup on the laser. Managed to get it to the point it will reliably read some discs, some discs it will start ok then a few seconds in just drop the audio, others it will not read at all.

Cleaned the laser, rails etc as best I can.

Is a new pickup likely to sort this out? Or might it be something else?
