I dont think they are neglected as such, neither do i think of them as pioneers in suspension, though the affordability side is there.

I used to love my 856 and decent examples demand good money these days . Would love to find a decent one in my size

There's very little true innovation in cycling. You can see early suspension designs around a century ago. But I think you can be a pioneer in terms of access, affordability and application as others have said. For me, Proflex do fit that bill.
