The economy and all that ?

I have been wondering seeing we are hearing so much about how the economy must be put first, and I have been asking others offline the same question which resulted in various answers, but still in a bid to understand I will ask that same question here of you fine folk ;

The economy, who does it serve ?

The question is but a simple one that does not need to be anything more than it is ;

Who does the economy serve ?

Or is it there are many answers, just like I received from those offline, which could indicate no one really knows ?

But seeing as you replied, therefore the question I asked, you felt you needed to answer with nothing really constructive, which could indicate you also don't know ?

Perhaps it indicates I cannot be arsed answering a question the asker cannot be arsed giving their own take on.

Tit.
Not sure there's any need for that.

I think it's a reasonably interesting question, and posing it, and hopefully prompting a discussion, doesn't require the OP give chapter and verse, first - often that just sets an agenda.

He states his opinion first, it colours a debate. He poses an open question, he gets people who care about the question to contribute Frank and Ernest (obscure SLJ gag) responses.

If you didn't like what he was asking, or the way he was asking, you didn't need to jump on it.

As to the original question, as to who it serves, well I'd say it serves those with the wherewithal to do well from it (either existing money, investment, business interests, business, or nous to profit from it). For those without such a position, in recent times, I'd say it's more a cost - albeit, perhaps an essential one for the country. I think the banking and financial sectors, though, could do with some reform, and / or a tougher standpoint by the gummint - oh and not meddling with it for pure politics reasons.

As to who it should serve, well that's more a political standpoint, isn't it?

Bore off - this is a cycling forum!

Off-topic has been refreshingly free of this kind dogma for some time.
Well everybody has an opinion - but you don't have to read it, if it doesn't interest you.

Technically it serves everyone.

But big business (international companies part based in the uk, large supermarkets, banks and such) benefit most.
Everyone else to varying degrees gets smaller and smaller crumbs left over till you get to the normal man/woman on the street who seems to be working more for the same or usually less than they were 2 or 3 years ago.

(that's my simple answer)

In the ideal big busines employ most and provide jobs, technology services and R&D which should benefit everyone and make lives better via employment and advances in science, healthcare 3d tv - everyone benefits from a better std of living, medical advances etc. smaller/medium sized businesses provide services & support to them and their employees.

In the real world big business promise lots, screw you over and take the money - me jaded no never!

Except where do our pension investments etc go...in shares of big businesses, which hopefully allows us to retire at a reasonable age and live comfortably thereafter.

Sadly we have all lived too long beyond our means - as consumers borrowing too much, and as a society borrowing too much and being unwilling to pay the taxes necessary to support the services we consider our right.

I frankly get a bit sick of people who demand a better NHS and yet simultaneously complain about taxation.

BTW, I've never voted tory and my formative years were in a mining area of Co Durham just after the pits shut. If anyone says screw business and the economy, they should see an area with over 20% unemployment. Te state was pretty powerless to do much about it either.
