Have you considered that they might be trying to get fit, or even, shock horror, just enjoying themselves, or do you need to be under a certain weight to be a cyclist?
I've considered it, yes.

But in the examples I've seen, summarily dismissed it. They seem to show no real change, over time, and fitness and athleticism of cycling seems to have no bearing in their interest or what they choose to brag about.

Just seems curious, to me. BITD being enthused about cycling seemed to have a requisite component of achievement or aspiration of fitness and athleticism, but these days, for some that I see, it appears to have no bearing or interest whatsoever.

I'm not suggesting that invalidates it - by all means, let them eat cake, um, literally as well metaphorically, it's just a curious change in the times for me.
An observation from a " reborn " mountain biker who is now overweight was at a local race where i was suprised at the number of guys who were as overweight as me , i thought i was the only one  anyway 20 years ago when i was a fit boxer / kickboxer / coach i rode mountain bikes because i enjoyed it, not to get fit , what i noticed back then was listening to groups of cyclists that the road guys would talk about heart rates and fitness and the mountain bikers would be talking about the latest kit and technical innovation . :)

'BITD' there were people with more money than sense, just as there are now. If there weren't, Evans would've gone out of business a long time ago!

I enjoy riding because I don't like walking much, and it gets me to the next pub faster. Suffice to say; I am not fit, and never have been. :)
