Had a dig around last night and found a few bits and bobs. I have found the full spec for David Bakers 1992 race bike which might help.

Bit of a mish mash.
Thumbie was used because he said he suffered from hand fatigue on longer races and he could use his whole hand to shift instead of thumbs.
Cassette was a lash up because the XTR's kept coming loose.
Rear brake set up was because the XTR was too powerfull and just locked all the time. the cyclocross set up was just enough to slow without slowing too much

Found pics of Paul Hintons Team bike from late 1992. It has full XTR M900 but with Manitou ! forks and Tioga Disc drive.
