I'm bringing a '91 Cannondale back to life, and I'm trying to salvage as many of the original parts as possible because I'm on a tight budget.

I've cleaned and re-jockey wheeled the original Suntour rear mech, but the shifter is shot. I have a 7 speed Shimano shifter/brake combo I'd like to use, and it fits well with the retro feel of the bike. Are they compatible?
Cheers :D

No it won't work properly. The cog spacing is slightly different on the suntour cassette. get a new suntour shifter if you want to fix it or else you'll have to replace the rear hub/cassette and dérailleur to a shimano. But i believe it would be cheaper to look for a new/replacement suntour shifter on ebay.

damn lag. hope that helps btw.

Hmm, Suntour 7's Thumbshifter, Suntour 7's Cassette, only 3/5 compatibility with a Suntour rear mech, but 4/5 with Shimano.

Carl.

Thanks guys, I have a Shimano mech I can use, its just that the Suntour one would have been preferable because it looks better, and is of course original.
I'll probably have a look for another Suntour shifter. ;)

If it's the cog spacing that differs, then will not a Shimano shifter index with a Shimano CASSETTE irrespective of the rear mech? Few mechs have inbuilt indexing - altho' obviously modern Sram have a different actuation ratio.
