Suntour/Shimano compatability

If it's the cog spacing that differs, then will not a Shimano shifter index with a Shimano CASSETTE irrespective of the rear mech? Few mechs have inbuilt indexing - altho' obviously modern Sram have a different actuation ratio.

has to be a shimano compatible mech, campag mechs are a slightly different shift and dont always index well. I remember trying to index a Campagnolo Record mech on my Zaskar - just wouldnt have it yet I am running 7spd shimano shifters, shimano cassette on a Campagnolo hub and rear mech on my road bike.

cross compatibility outside Sachs and Suntour is sporadic.

Shimano shifter , Shimano cassette, and SunTour mech will in fact work well.

This table show that what I am using is not compatible.
7speed Shimano STI with 8 speed Shimano cassette maybe is not compatible(obvious 1gear difference),but for me it works fine.
