Suntour Accushift and Shimano compatibilty

Hi, I've got a Suntour X-1 groupset with 7 speed Suntour Accushift X-Press shifters and Suntour X-1 mechs.

I'm pretty sure these will only work properly with Suntour hubs and cassettes. Is this correct or do they work with Shimano hubs and cassettes? I can't remember whether the spacing is different or not. I'm sure you can use Suntour XC mechs and thumbies ok with Shimano but not sure about the Accushift shifters, also if I used thumbshifters with the X-1 mechs would I be able to use Shimano hubs and cassettes?

Any help would be asppreciated

I'm using a 1990 XC Comp/Pro 7's drive train (mechs and shifters) with XT M732 hubs and cassette. It works perfectly and was a favourite swap out BITD as it cleans up the shifting.

7 and 8 speed Suntour and Shimano cassette spacing is the same so Xpress will work fine too.

The spacing is different. It was done on purpose, to prevent cross over use of both brands, as they were in direct competion back then. This was a pretty big subject all those years ago..

Dude, 3rd bike down in my sig is running it perfectly and did through all the gloop out there last Saturday, you are welcome to come and see it in action any time.

If the figures in Sheldon Brown are incorrect, what are the correct figures?

I've mixed Suntour shifters with Shimano cassette/mechs and vice versa with no problem and don't know the technical answer, but I'm happy to go along with SB unless someone can show me he was wrong on this.

I'm using suntour xc comp mechs and shifters on my clockwork with a shimano cassette and it works perfectly better than it did with full dx on it before
