Suggestion for BOTM...

You're the one who makes a dickhead comment to a completely innocent post I make, with a simple suggestion, and I'm the one with the issue?!

Sort yourself out.

Still wondering at that attitude and what has upset you so much.

For what it's worth I'm guessing it was just in relation to the 'it'll become an invite only club' comment. Although, to be honest, I read that as I think you intended it - which was just as a thought in the general discussion, rather than singling anyone out for abuse. Just my reading though *quickly withdraws nose from where it's not wanted* :)

(And although there are no sides to be taken - I'll always go with someone who's just sent me a shiny cassette and rear mech :D )

i think the botm format is just fine. but I have seen a steady decline in entries over the last few months.
but I don't agree with the constant reposting of someones favourite.
but I do love a good handbag fight.

Re:

I quite like the idea of a 'bike you like' - which doesn't have to be nos, or even necessarily finished. Just a great thread with a great bike at the heart of it - whatever state it happens to be in.

From a personal point of virw, I can see how something like that could inspire someone to keep cracking on - which you need sometimes when you've spent months looking for an RC45, getting a cracked frame sorted or whatever.

By the time i got to the end of the thread i had forgotten what the original post was about

I cant really remember how the original format worked but i should imagine it was during the peak of RB. From what i have seen/read there were lots of bikes being built, found etc. Now a quick look through the build threads, readers bikes there doesnt seem to be many. There are still some nice bikes poping up but they seem to just appear once built, i cant see how nominating others bikes would work. Would it be a case of trawling the old build threads and picking bikes out or waiting for a new build to appear and nominating that?

Would the BotM become just for fancy bikes? i mean there a still lots of nice but less expensive/desirable builds that as it is now are entered by their owners. If it was nominations only would those bikes never be entered?

I like the format as it is now, and with slight variations it could still be a viable event. Maybe a seperate comp for show bikes and another for riders and everyday bikes.

I dont think it will ever be as popular as it was regardless of what happens due to the fact not as many bikes are being built now!

And did someone mention biscuits!?

Why it became a 'competition' (on a popularity model) is beyond me and a total anathema to my way of thinking, but I'm sure the reasoning, if any, was innocent enough. . . . IMHO there was no need to have a 'popularist winner' each month, but as a vehicle to magnetise and inspire, of course the dynamic has proven to be strong for many people and we've undoubtedly been treated to hundreds amazing sights in a compact format. Maybe one day, some archivist will collate it all together and make a half-decent coffee table book...
Where's the 'Like' button when I want one? Completely agree.

So I’m going to win then?

Because of the bright green Muddy Fox with the, er, testicularly-shaped appendage at the back? Who knows? But the nominations might be unpredictable. Perhaps nominating others' bikes ought to be tried as a theme one month and then, if it's a success, run as a regularly occurring variation, though not necessarily every month.

Re:

I think nominating others bikes could be tried every 3mths, as it may take a bit more planning. The format could defo do with a theme shake up, pub bikes, builds under £300, kids bkes, wifes bike etc etc

Using the above as a reference

From what I’ve seen Adrian already asks- welcome ideas for themed month so if you think the above should happen send him a PM

Lastly as an open question to you all... go back and see what / who came out on top for the super elusive BOTY award in 2017
and then tell me its the preserve of big budget boutique brands adorned with super exotic bling and funded by budget akin to a telephone number in size
Sure those bike are aspirational but the voters (you) don’t have to follow like sheep. .... and BOTY proves you don’t

I want to be impressed / inspired by BOTM so really don’t want to see Apollo/Emmelles or Kirks entered as a theme
If they’re sufficiently different than the examples abandoned at the local tip let them go head to head / toe to toe with everything else
That’s why a build thread is mandatory

Mandatory? Really? There are some that enter that I've never seen before and are never seen again. Not challenged or deselected though.

If you have rules they should be followed. If not no problem but don't make rules and apply them to suit.

Personally I like the more relaxed approach as it doesn't mess with my OCD but others like the hard edges. I like to see bikes that are different to the usual or have a back story like the stolen recovered or the 'this was what I always wanted'. Build threads allow the voter to connect with the bike and builder. Much more important than a perfect period build.

Anyone considered bso of the week? Remember visiting a car site years ago (barry boys?) where they ran shed of the week... which was reader submitted photos of kid's metros with bits of plastic fibre glassed on and 6r4 badges stuck on the back. You get the idea. Could be a laugh. :D

Edit: Found the link - it's still going www.barryboys.co.uk/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=12
