or better yet, just use the propper tool

I'm doing quite well with homemade tools:

- Headset press from some steel plate, bolts and a really long threaded rod

- Vacuum Cleaner Tube crown race installer

- Socket extension Star Nut installer.

:)

just dont ever open a bike shop ;)

Erm, if you want to bodge it, very long sacrificial allen bolt and a mallet. If the bolt stays central in the head tube then the washer is straight.

Yep, just done this when I cut my new steerer tube down to size after having some new forks fitted and my lbs left the washer right at the top.

Gentle taps, checking all the time, no problems.

Must admit that I've tried gentle taps and almighty 'whump' (with eyes closed of course) and found that the latter gives satisfactory results plus the added element of surprise when you open your eyes and survey the resulting damage or lack thereof

Generally, I let my LBS to the more 'technical' stuff (or, the stuff that could prove expensive if it went wrong!), but as I was in a 'must do it now cus I've got new stuff that must be fitted now cus I really want to' I gave it a go.

As a rule, I dont like doing anything if I havent got the correct tool.

PLEASE, PLEASE , PLEASE use the correct tool, we have seen steerers shear in half with bad installation!

I like having nice tools. If i had a shed/tool box it would well  to put them in. Plus i've never used a tool once. Even when i thought why am i buying this? when i wont need it. Then six weeks later i find i will need it.
Oh and my bodges always look like a bodge. I'm a bad bodger
