I can guess the answer but will ask anyway.

Im looking to repaint a pair of spd pedals. These are like shimano so have a pair of springs each side. I imagine even at lowest tension setting there still is considerable tension making it dangerous to take apart.... not to mention parts go pingig off when taking apart. Likewise difficulty when reassembling them.

Best left alone or has anyone tried?

Re:

I've done this successfully not because I wanted to but because I was servicing them and somehow undid the tension adjusting allen bolt beyond it's stop  So it was a case of having to repair it. I didn't dismantle the rest of the pedal but I did loosen the plates as it made the job a bit easier. I also remember using either a small screwdriver or an allen key for some leverage at one point - oh, and some foul language ;) The tension springs won't go pinging off anywhere as they're on their own separate spindle. The trick is to get enough play in the plates etc to make it possible to fit the tension adjustment allen bolt.
The pedal I fixed was an M737. If you just want to paint the pedals It might be best to do so with everything in place
Have fun and good luck :D
