Some more sad news, I'm afraid

Thanks for dropping in John. Great to hear the pedals are still being turned, even if it is e-assist and good to hear you have a good crew around you (wife & daft dogs!) to keep you entertained and out of mischief!

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. Sorry I can't reply to them all, but it's just lovely to hear how many people blame me in part for their mountain bike addiction :)

This cancer thing is very very odd. Aside from often being unusually tired, I feel pretty normal. I can still ride, though I've wussed out and gone electric-assist. I have a collection of scars that will win me pretty much any healed-wound willy-waving contest and I'm generally keeping cheerful thanks to being looked after by my amazing wife Caroline and entertained by our collection of daft dogs.

Someone said they wanted to buy me a pint. If anyone else feels that way, I'm in Cambridge these days, so if you happen to be in these parts, drop me a line.
@2manyoranges

Sorry to hear, I started riding in the very late 1980's and took part in the early Quantock MTB races, The Quantock Cracker etc.
John & the MBUK crew being based at Bath meant we often saw the places we rode in the Wrecking Crew tests in the Magazine.
It was a huge part of my youth and I still ride those hills now, Cancer is horrible and I just wish to extend my thanks for John and others who made the British MTB scene what it was. It felt like OURS and not just some American import.

The people who made the following brands what they were; MBUK, Orange, Pace, X-Lite, Middleburn, etc etc Iconic.

Thank you.

Hey John, hat was me who mentioned the pint. Unfortunately Im pretty far away, Newbury Berks. Although I do have an old riding buddy your way I need to catch up with (A 1990 Rocky Mountain Cirrus rider no less, bitd) - I do the odd club ride with someone you prob know from back than as well, Simon Haiseman. Good to hear your keeping busy

Good to see you posting John. Julie & I were reminiscing about the early days, Quantock Quest and all that, and the advent of the MBUK events at Llanwrtyd Wells.
I remember us cycling up the ‘Welsh Flat’ with you and the MBUK crew at one point and myself being spontaneously voted for the MBUK ‘Most Classic Component’ award, as I had a Biopace chainset and Hite-Rite on my bike. I remember I was unsure if that was ‘a good thing’ because I was convinced they were still cool. This is years before RB of course. But hey, I still have the bike as it was then, BB mounted roller-cam and all. 🥳
All the best

Just picked up on this thread. So deeply saddened by the news.

John - you are responsible for much of my early days knowledge and I owe so much to you despite only ever meeting, at best, in passing at cycle events/shows in the late 80/early 90s. Much love and respect to you
