A few reminders, from previous posts...
We did a lot of research here on Retrobike to see what prices looked like for King Kahuna frames in general.
- The general range for used frames alone was around £500 on the low end to £700 or so on the high end.
- It should be emphasized that those are prices for used frames.
- This is an essentially new frame, never sold, and barely ridden.
- This is a new King Kahuna frame from a year that is relatively rare and hard to find, namely, 1996...the first year the bike was available. We think you will agree, if you search around, that finding 1996 King Kahunas at all, much less a new one, is not easy. There are not many around.
- The 1996 model year, apart from being rare in and of itself, is actually a very unique year, as it was the ONLY year that the KK option included full 6/4 seatstays, and the Hei Hei's original round tubes, without the typical KK gussets.
- So, at this point, we have a new frame, from a hard-to-find year, and that year is itself unlike any other year for the same model. So that's just the frame alone.
- Next, consider that the bike has an all-OEM Kona Kit, also new, from the manufacturer, which is quite difficult to find.
- Next, consider the fact that the complete bike, all OEM, has never been sold, and is essentially unused.
- And finally, the fact that we can document the bike with the original dealer paperwork, with serial numbers that match the bottom bracket and the kit you see, gives the buyer a high degree of confidence that the rather unique, essentially new, and hard-to-find bike he/she is looking at, is in fact what it appears to be.
For your reference, on separate threads under the "eBay Watch" forum, other Retrobike readers have reported that more common 1998 Kona King Kahuna frames were sold new for £1600 (again, frame only). Needless to say, 1998 frames are easier to find than the original 1996 model, and of course the 1996-1998 original prices have appreciated 18 years later, for a hard-to-find, as-new frame from that vintage year -- an original unicorn from that year is worth more today than what it cost then.
Again, the reduced price for the complete bike is £2699 + actual shipping costs.

Looked at the pics and have to say the bike would have benefited from being stripped and cleaned. Properly cleaned
Plus the tyres are cracked. At that sort of price, better tyres would be expected. In fact, most of the components are quite poor choices :? With plenty of nos about :?
Ive a quake 9.0 from 1997 that i found in a branch of cash converters. It im figuring done about 30 miles from new and is all complete to the original,right down to the air in the inner tubes.
Full XT groupset with white industries all minty mint condition
I could never charge £3000 though :? Wouldnt even try

If you can find another example of a new/unsold 1996 King Kahuna complete bike, with an OEM Kona kit that you like better, at a price that appeals to you (and that has completely uncracked original tires, 18 years later), we hope you will enjoy it.

We hear your perspective, that you would have preferred different components. The bike is as it came from the Kona factory in 1996, and that's what we have chosen to preserve, as that is important to some buyers. The invoice for the original Kona kit that came from the factory was posted for the same reason, and we already noted that the original tires have aged. In short, where you have the desire to strip the bike and/or change parts, we made a different philosophical choice, which was to preserve the bike as it came from Kona. We have consciously never sought to change, restore or "improve upon" what is an all-original bike (and which includes its original documentation). If others want to do that, we understand. The discussion is more that that might be OEM kona kit..
But it's not OEM King Kahuna level kit... Which is way over pricing the bike... Sorry if that's breaking the rules mods but it's on 6 pages of near daily bumps. Now a cookbros/xtr/syncros/Magura/control tech... Ect hardly ridden bike would be a different animal.
I do wish you both all the best with this find. I just don't think that the big ticket collectors on this forum will bite at this spec/price, even to secure the frame.

Unfortunately the "collectible bike market" is a very small market in which there are only a few big ticket collectors. Those guys tend to pay top dollar only for the most desirable items.
It's obvious the the number of best offers that the bike has received is a good proxy for market interest.
personally, I hope this thing sells and we are privy to the transaction price. I think it can only be helpful to both buyers and sellers to see what items truly sell for.
