so what groupsets do you avoid on your builds?

I'd have/have had ;) pretty much anything on my bikes if it works or I like the look of it, though I don't think I'd EVER intentionally put 1990-92 GS/LX 'Piano Shifters' on my bike, IMO, they are just plain UGLY and arn't the most natural feeling shifter.

Always just like th elook and reliablilty of the 739 stuff, Do like the 90's XTR stuff but the price is a tad high for the performance increase you get for me.

I've gone right off M95* XTR, rear mechs are a pain to set up...

Like Black LX!

Like STX RC

Love M900 XTR

Wouldn't go below STX on a build... got some plans for my Cadex to be my STX RC bike!

I think the black LX is really nice, as is STX, STX RC, and XT 737/739 from around the same period.

Shimano (in my eyes) then took a turn for the worse when they introduced the 4 bolt chainsets with the horrible curvy arms, as opposed to the lovely clean lines of their 5 bolt predecessors.

XTR to me has always been a bit of an exception to the rule, as I've always found it to look nice in it's various incarnations, although I prefer a M900 rear mech to a M950, and I prefer a M950 crank to a M900. The M960 incarnation is my favourite of the lot though. I love the polished finish.

I have never had SRAM. I just never 'got' it. :?

I love early 90's DX, and XC PRO from around '95.
Nothing have ever looked lovelier than these two.... until M970 that is! :)

Okay, I currently have bikes built up around the following Shimano groupsets:

200GS, 400LX, LX M550, DX M650, XT M732/5, STX, STX-RC, LX M560, LX M567/9, XT M739, XT M750 and a couple of more modern ones.

Currently I also have non completed bikes with:
Deore MT-60, LX M563, LX M565, XT M737, Exage Mountain/Trail, SRAM ESP900 and Sachs Plasma/Centera.

An obvious omission at present is any XTR. I hope to remedy this at some point with an M900 and an M950 build. I have accumulated a few parts but it just tends to be a bit too expensive all the time.
I'd also like to get a couple of Suntour equipped bikes in there. Having used a pair of XC-Pro thumbshifters on my main bike between 1996 and 2004, I can fondly remember how well they always worked.

I've no real interest in the lower end groupsets from the early 90's onwards like Altus, Acera and Alivio. Having worked on a few bikes with such components fitted I can say that, although perfectly functional, there is nothing more ugly than an Altus C50 rear mech from 1994.
Tourney comes pretty close though.

I have got a 100GS rear mech in my rear mech collection...
It's far too rare a thing to actually use.

I do quite like the black LX groupsets, especially the first M560 one from 1993. The problem I find, in terms of collecting them, is the number of subtle variations between 1993 and 1999 when it changed to the horrible blueish M570 edition.

DX is still my favourite groupset.

I'm glad others feel that way....I have recently finished a 91 fisher with nothing but dx drivetrain/brakes/gearing and it's great......the silver on black on silver on the rear mech looks lovely!.....

i first came across XT M739/40 by chance on a bike frame that brought me here...
i love it.

i quite like XT M770 (again, came across by chance rather than choice)

also like STX RC - for looks/second hand prices more than anything. i like things that polish up nicely :)

LXM571 - had a brief fling with this, but didn't feel as robust as XT M739/40 parts. so got rid.

I haven't touched much else. Had some SRAM - the looks never appealed to me and also had the usual lower end Shimano junk.

I love my XT M739/40 group set (just about to complete the set) the shifters IMO are the best i've ever used - although i like the lightness of the M770 LH shifter.

i'd love to find and have the money to get myself a completely NOS M739/40 group set and put it on a lush frame or in my bed - i am in no way embarrassed or ashamed of saying that.

XTR is a no go for me.

XTR is for professional racers or wannabes, and I am neither of those.

If I were building an homage bike like a JMC rep or a genuine ex pro racer bike to be as they raced it, then XTR would be fine if that's what they used, but other than that I don't see any need for more than XT.

we all know the stuff we like to use, i think we have as a forum quite similar choices. we seem to aim for xt/xtr

:D

Also that is a very sweeping statement. Which is not true
