So Do You Count The Cost Of Your Builds ?

Do you add up your costs ? Or just try to ignore it ...

I am refering to costs per completed bike, not of the total fleet, spares, tools, consumables - oil, cleaners etc

Just wondering really as IMO my Marin was quite 'cheap' to do (pending the cost of some forks - when I can find some ... :?) as I reused most of the core parts, however I never kept accurate records - I could have a pretty good guess though ;-)

I am keeping good records on the cost of the Proflex (and will reveal at the end of the build). It's adding up a bit but will be well speced with mostly new / A1 condition parts and all new xtr running gear :)

I was just wondering what some folk had spent (and if they were willing to reveal it ) for something 'top end' / period correct / rare / fancy paint etc

Do tell ...

No, the thought scares the hell out of me, I'd be too paranoid if I worked it out. I know the ball park figures for insurance purposes but that is as far as I go.

I think I only keep a track of when I feel I've got myself a bargain and pat myself on the back for it.
I reckon this sugars the pill of what would no doubt be a frightening amount of money spent overall.
That said I try not to think about how much I've spent on cycling over the years and concentrate on how much enjoyment it's brought me.
Worth every last penny.

No I dont think I dare, I certainly wouldnt want to leave anything laying about in the house for her indoors to find, that would be suicide

Have to, only a finite amount of funds. Hence selling before buying ;)

I know roughly what my bikes cost to build

Clockwork ~£500
Falcon roadbike ~£80
Orange 5 ~£2500
Next bike .....

Apart from the Falcon I always end up thinking 'oh crap' when I realise the build cost, usually because I've gone over budget...

Must stop buying shiny things....

I don't care . I buy stuff and have it lying around for months before I realise I have a bikes worth of crap and strap it all together . If I don't have enough money then I don't buy anything I need or want . It kinda pisses me off when someone asks what one of my bikes cost , I don't care at all so why should other people ? People only ask so they can evaluate it in their mind against something they have paid for and often don't realise with these bikes the monetary value is fairly insignificant when you add things like sentimentality , rarity and desire .

What do my bikes cost ? Well I've got what I want and I didn't have to starve getting it and that's good enough for me .

Saying that , about 5 years ago when I lived with a mate we estimated our bike stuff was a bit over 8k . There was a full m950 groupset , numerous frames kicking about , loads of carbon and a handful of bikes between us . But each day we were rubbing the pennys together and the electric was forever going off as it was a key thing . " what do we need electric for anyway ? there's nothing in the freezer and we never use the fridge " " true , but I am kind of fond of hot water to wash with "

No I do not....
I do not care much about money.
When I buy a project (I never buy complete finished bikes, I do not see what's the fun of that) I have in mind what the bike should look like and that is leading, not the budget.
I think it helps that I life alone and a gf that doesn't care what I do with my money.
Also I am a bad seller, I have so much gear that I buy during the build that is replaced by something else (better) before it is finished and those parts end up in the storage.
Sometimes I put some stuff up for sale because I think someone should use it because it is nice and I won't be using that.
When I would count what a bike is costing
me I guess that would take some fun away
