Single front cog conversion

Hello everybody

I’ve bought a 2005 Rocky Mountain ETSX-70 and have set about making a few tweaks.

Apparently the front mechs are notoriously tricky to get in tune and mine seems to be no exception!

I’d like to remedy this by going for a single ring at the front maybe with a chain device?

From my bit of google-ing it seems you can use a your existing cranks just with shorter bolts or something? What’s the actual deal with that?

For the time being it’ll just be a 1x9 set up so with that in mind how many teeth would I want at the front?

I spend very little time on the smallest rear and do need to be able to climb.

Also I’ve never really needed a chain device before but have been getting more aggressive recently. What, if any should I be looking at?

Any thoughts or advice greatly received!

Shorter bolts as you'll (presumably) be losing the granny ring.

Just leave the front mech on, adjust the high and low screws so it holds over the ring, and try it out.

Re:

Cheers dudes, any need for a device?

I guess only if I want to get much agro on the rougher stuff?

I thought 30T too so that sounds good.

Re:

I ran a 1x7 set up for years, no special rings or chain devices, no problems whatsoever.
