I tried a 30.0 mm seat tube sleeve on my Mount Vision this weekend. Sleeve went in as easily as the 29.8 sleeve, and the post went in snugly but without the need for any more force than when inserting a post into any other frame I have ever used. I then did a 50 km ride on Sunday on the Marin, and the slipping seat post issue is now fixed.

So, 30.0 does actually appear to be the actual size on this frame.

Yep, as I said, the earlier round tube profile frames are 30.0mm. The later shaped tube ones are 27.0mm, which is a pain as you can't really find that many decent posts in that size. The difference in weight between the frames is about 30g from memory, and it's about the same for the different rear swing arms (the later stuff being the lighter ones). When you consider that you can get a 120g seat post in a 27.2mm size shimmed to the older frame, it is a massive saving overall when you are forced into using a 250-300g post on the later frame.

End of 98, beginning of the 99 year model. The 97 used the weaker original design, that were being replaced under warranty as many developed cracks. There are loads of these still out there in reliable service, but their fail rate brought about a swift redesign for a stronger swing arm which also incorporated disc tabs.
The B-17 from 97 did have a disc mount, but it was a very limiting design that required a Hope adapter for use with their C2 calipers. Basically, it was two threaded holes on the top of the swingarm. If you have an adapter for one of these, it will only accept a C2 caliper - nothing else fits it.

My 2000 Marin (UK spec*) Mount Vision. Pictured here in 2002 about 5 mins before its new owner collected it. It had only been ridden about 120 miles, was returned to totally standard spec when sold - broke my heart to sell it but I needed £500 to pay the deposit for my mortgage that week and no other way to raise funds! I replaced this with a 2005 Marin Wolf Ridge which I'll take pics of over the weekend when I dig it out (almost quite literally!) from the heap of boxes and stuff in the garage!
*IIRC in 2000 the Marin USA and UK spec models which had same names and same basic groupsets, differed quite a bit in other specs and colours. This is the uglier colour scheme of the two Mount Visions that year. The USA spec was silver and red and much better looking!
