Show us what you did today, thread

Good blast round Pitmedden today. Trails running really nice.
Crappy wee video of our exploits

Warning, may induce vomit if watched on a large screen. Zigzag's bouncing mood were shaking the camera to hell.

Zigzag, you do know ye can get a sports-bra that would stop all the bouncing? ;)

:) I will not be oppressed. My moobs will swing low and free.

If that's the case can I suggest you apply some helicopter tape to your toptube to prevent excessive wear and tear to the paint

Re:

I read the vomit warning and did indeed feel nausea when watching the vid. However upon post watch analysis i could not tell if it was the juddering or the site of the rider in front that caused the nausea. Looked fun though, I must get to Pitmedden again some day.

On the LHT today.
Caleb had a class he goes to each Saturday so we decided to take the Trucker with his new Yepp seat. He grew too big for his i-Bert seat, his trailer is a bit of a pain in the wind and his tag a long is good for short trips only at the moment due to him being too young to go too far on it. He has done a few short runs in it but needed to see how he went on a slightly longer run, both mileage and time wise as we have a tour of Orkney coming up and a few other longer tour runs.
Its very easy to fit, theres a section bolts onto my rack and then the seat mounts, locks in and is key locked on. The seat is a metal frame and the body is a sort of rubberised material with plenty of drain holes. It was recommended by a lot of people who tour with kids on a few forums and facebook. I originally looked at it as its compatable with an xtracycle setup and also a Big Dummy, one of which we are hoping to build for some longer tours and general riding. The other runs on this were with it mounted to Heathers Specialized and not the Trucker, hence why we giving it a shake down on it. It actually worked better on the Trucker as it was far more stable, maybe due to the longer stays of the trucker, which also usually feels better when loaded. Due to this mounting on my rear rack we will use my rear ortliebs on my front rack when we go away. Between these, the bar bag and a bit of space on the front rack we should be fine.
Anyway it ran really well, stayed stable and while it weighs a little bit, though far better than most, and Caleb weighs a bit as well, it was nowhere near as 'weighty' as I thought it would feel. The bike handled the same, steered the same, etc.
Caleb absolutely loved it, as he does with most of his bike rides or 'adventures' and he was comfortable at all times. Considering we had a good hours solid ride through the back country to get him into Thurso in time, then ride through town to lunch with mum and then a zig zag route home that must have been at least an hour and a half with stops and detours, thats pretty good. We did about 26 mile or so and thats pretty good for a four year old.
We just beat the rain home and despite the forecast it was pretty cold in the wind, but after a hot chocolate for Caleb and a coffee for me, we jumped in the car before dinner to drive up the road and see if the Puffins have returned to the cliffs. There were a few but nowhere near the numbers that will be there in the next few weeks.
So a busy day for me and for Caleb I think, as he is now in bed sound asleep.
Thats what I did and just thought I'd share, along with a couple of pics ;)

I bet you sometimes wish you had someone to shelter behind with those Caithness winds :) Never tried a seat, think we'll probably just dust off the Burley again when the time comes - to me it seems a slightly safer option with the lower centre of gravity, "roll cage", and the mesh / rain cover etc

Re:

The seat works well and its just another 'bow' to his arsenal. Certainly if the weather is even looking like rain, then the trailer is the only way to go. A shower or two may be fine in the seat or tag a long but no one would want to be strapped in a seat for a rainy tour
I think its just as safe as the trailer and its centre of gravity is low enough. Its certainly lower on this than the cheaper 'halford' type seats you see about and weighs a lot less than those as well. these Dutch Yepp seat systems are some of the best out there, for quality and practicality in use. He likes his tag along but i dont think, being 4, that he has the stamina to concentrate and hold on for anything longer than shortish runs at this stage. I worry that he will let go or think he's in the trailer and just fall asleep
So the tag a long is used around home, mainly for quick runs in the evening. The trailer and now the seat are the distance machines and for the summer, hopefully, sunny and warm, then the seat, which is easier to use will see a lot of use.
If we build a big Dummy then the seat will mount on that and we will also mount a Hooptie which is a protection bar that goes around the rack for when kids are sitting in them. It mounts to the xtracycle as well. Its all good fun :D

Sounds like you have all the options covered jamie.

Good to see the wee man out. So is it a family cycle touring holiday your doing in Orkney?
