Sealskinz socks

After more time than I care to remember riding in extended torrential rain & deep surface water theres no way to stay 100% dry. If you wear full waterproofs head to toe you get as wet through sweat. If you wear standard bike kit, with either overshoes, waterproof socks, or goretex shoes or similiar, the water simply runs down your legs & fills up in your shoes/socks.
I've learnt to accept I'm going to get wet; its more important to stay warm.

Wet and warm....mmmm

Ummmmmmmmmmm.

Sort of mixed views then.

If you get a pair that do what they are supposed to do ,they are great. If not, you're disapointed then ?

Mine are Ok for an hour or so. Take them off , and check after a couple of hours and they are wet inside.

Might send back to CRC for an exchange. Second item to be returned to them this week now.... :(

Well I did a very wet and muddy 18 mile ride today wearing my sealskins.
Within the first 3 miles we had to ride through a 2 foot deep stream and I was the only one with waterproof socks on.
Everybody else moaned like hell but I was fine.
I had a pair of very thin socks on under my sealskins and these were dry as a bone when I got home, even after I used the jetwash to clean my shoes
Think all of my mates who I rode with today are going to be buying some this week!

Both gloves and socks leak, much to my disgust at the horror of paying so much for them.

The gloves are awful, as I can't feel anything when I wear them, as they are so thick.

Anybody discuss how uncomfortable seal skin socks are, or is that just me?

Perhaps I should wear 99p woolen mitts and a pair of Black rubber gloves instead...

Often you need to go up a shoe size to get comfortable as they can be a bit bulkier than standard socks.

I found that having a bit more wiggle room for my toes also improves circulation and keeps my feet warmer.

I use sealskin socks and overshoes and my feet do tend to feel dampafter a ride, TBH I think this could be sweat more than leakage.

i also bought some recently due to good reccomendations. after 3 rides, i'm wondering if it was worth it. they were very wet rides tho, mabie, ae & dalby... i'm assuming the water just came over the top but after dalby i needed to massage some warmth into my toes very carefully before i could feel anything!

we'll see how they fare tomorrow, maybe some of those northwave celcius boots are gonna have to be the next purchase!
maybe we're just destined to get wet tho... we are waterproof after all ;)

After getting sick of cold feet(not wet) last winter I bought some North Wave celcius boots and hey presto the end of cold feet!
I wear them with merino wool socks and whilst water can get in over the top they do keep your feet warm. They do size up quite small though,I bought a size larger than normal for thicker sock use and they only just fit
Also once your core temperature starts to drop your feet and hands will start getting cold no matter how well wrapped up they are, best not to have too many rest stops!

I am 6'7", have arms/legs like a gibbon and have awful circulation in my hands/feet so they feel like ice very easily. I bought a pair of the Mid Thermal Socks in X-Large and they fit my size 12 feet perfectly. They are also perfectly comfortable I find. I rode cross country from Farnham to Basingstoke on Saturday, rained for the 1 1/4 hour trip and I hit pretty well every puddle I could find.

My Air Max (well, everything) were soaked through and while my toes were a bit cold, they hadn't bothered me at all trip, which never ever happened with normal socks. My feet were perfectly dry, except for a little sweat which is to be expected. I then rode back on Sunday and it rained for the whole trip again, more heavily than before, it was only when I bombed it through a deep, long puddle that I got a little bit of water creep in through the tops of the socks. Even then, my feet were fine. I had been dreading cold feet more than anything and it just wasn't an issue.

My vote, for £20 you can't go wrong taking a gamble on these :). To avoid water creep from above if you are wearing full length trousers, you can try the 'cut up marigolds over the tops of the Sealskins' technique. You don't have to wear full length trousers but you'll like like a tool otherwise ;).

Cheers,

Nick.
