Scammers are aggressively targeting the retro bike community.

I got had, and I know why. I can blame my post covid fog, or my trust, or experience or a host of things. But what ever caused it, I let my guard down, and did what I've done hundreds of times before, and send funds direct via bank transfer for a bike.

Please just be aware, have a look at the photos in the post and if you see a bike or are asked to do a transfer do more checks than I did.

I'd hate for someone else to get had, but I know they are posting as recently as last night, so they are still trying.

I'm so sorry to hear that Colin. I was scammed by an account hacker on Retrobike late last year.
A few hundred quid, but a few hundred quid I didn't really have to lose.
Top man for the warning on here, it's easy to want to not tell people about it - heck I certainly didn't.

I’ve found the source of the photos. The bikes being offered all belong to this guy. Who I follow so, in the back of my mind I knew them! Bloody covid has fried my mind this month. I totally should have seen this as the scam it was.

It is happening with parts too. This weekend, I was searching for Deerhead shifter rebuild instructions. Found an excellent article with fantastic pictures of the teardown, all pieces cleaned and laid out on a distinct purple cloth. Also found a listing for a set for sale from Asia using the exact picture from the rebuild thread.

Yup, that’s one of the profiles they are using. I spoke to his boss, his school friends and messages his wife. He’s been hacked. So I asked them to make sure he changes his password so they can stop using his profile. Clearly it’s not happened yet so if anyone else wants to phone him at work please do!

I also think he’s blocked me, so I can’t flag his posts anymore. I’ve posted 2 other names that are also using the same bikes. If I get any more names I’ll add them to the blog.

I think if someone has the time to come up with a process to avoid this.

On another community I'm part of they have to have pictures of the item being sold with their forum name the forum and the days date.

It appears to be pretty much exclusively on face book pages at the moment. They have been trying again last night, with posts of the Yeti Ultimate and others again.
