Scammers are aggressively targeting the retro bike community.

Surely the idea IS to pick holes in the suggestion. As that is the way in which people are scammed …. Through the cracks and the false hope these things are foolproof.

All those things listed are easy to get around for a scammer. And simply adds hassle for sellers , moderators and members.

If that was introduced here I will be the first to say I would stop selling on here purely due to the time restraints it would require. It’s already easy and quicker to sell on eBay/fb as it is. It’ll kill the forum dead without the sales sections being active as that’s a whole lot of new content. I’ve seen it happen on other forums.

All these methods aren’t needed if you follow the simply rule of not transferring money to people you don’t know.

As well as the fact the OP wasn’t even transacting on here either (it was fb)

We are all adults and know the risk of putting money into someone’s account , if you chose to do it then it will always be a risk. The forum/moderators shouldnt need to hold peoples hand on transactions. If you want that simply use eBay.

I feel bad for the OP and glad he has spoken out but overly moderating the forum is a bad idea.

no need to feel bad for me, it was my mistake. I was foolish and even looking back now, it was clear I was being scammed.

It wasn't on the forum, it might not have happened on here for a host of reasons.

It's happening now on Facebook. They are targeting this community on there, via the various brand and associated pages so I posted it on here, because if you guys see it, you can be aware and make others aware when you see these bikes pop up.

Two more attemped sales last night.

So just be extra aware and yes the "don't send money to people you don't know" is a catch all that stop this dead. But myself and others have been doing exactly this for decades and done carefully its not caused me any problems. In fact its helped me lots of the years and I really hate Paypal, so wherever I can I don't like to use it. But I did get bitten this time and its my fault, but if I can help prevent even one person from falling for this, then it was worth the post, and I know its already prevented a lot more than 1!

They only way forward in my mind is the platforms used for selling must be held accountable for allowing scams to happen,they're a business they have a duty to protect they're customers.

Feel for you chap really do, but don't forget this.....it wasn't your fault! All your guilty of showing faith and trust hardly something to be at fault or guilty of!
Can I ask did you have any contact other than just messaging or any other form of pixelated contact?

I was just trying to help with some suggestions.... I'm fully aware nothing is foolproof but a couple of methods can help that's all.

Yes and please don’t take my comments as negative in such a way against you. Just I feel that it would strangle the forum and still not help.

We all want the same thing which is a safe place to sell/buy/chat but please nobody let their guard down. That’s why it’s good this thread exists.

Its a sad sad situation nowadays just about everyone has or knows of someone whose been had in some way.
I have ... It stings from small change sales on eBay where seller opens a dispute to be refunded to bankers drafts not clearing to having my virtual identify "borrowed" ...eBay account, PayPal all emails to restore security etc....it's quite sickening and has huge effect on people's psyche especially when police just brush it off as a civil dispute blah blah...
Collectively people need to join together and hammer the platforms for not offering protection it really is that simple!
I mean you run a nightclub someone's caught dealing poof there's your licence gone! Yet in the virtual world nobody is liable other than the perpetrated.

They are fishing for people who post in the "wanted" section, and not just posting things for sale.

We've had the same attempts to fish in the wanted section of this forum too quite some time ago, hence why there is a sticky about the subject.

that I know of, so far it appears to the the vintage Yeti and Fat Chance pages, but they are the ones I'm in. It was a Cannondale that got me hooked but someone I know shared that with me, and I can't remember which page it was, but it clearly wasn't a yeti or fat chance one. They are basically working their way around the vintage facebook groups. I know MTB, but I'm guessing they are also in BMX because they have BMX photos too. He also talked to me about road but I said I wasn't interested.

They are finding people by responding to wanted posts, not just posting fake sales posts.
