Scammers are aggressively targeting the retro bike community.

Noted.

I think if someone has the time to come up with a process to avoid this.

On another community I'm part of they have to have pictures of the item being sold with their forum name the forum and the days date.

Cheers

J
All of which can easily be photoshopped if they needed. It would also put off genuine sellers and lower the sites traffic.

It’s bad that scammers operate and it’s worse when it’s a member on here too who’s been stung.

I personally would never send anyone I don’t know anything over beer money by bank transfer. PayPal and cover the fees only if it’s a substantial amount. If it’s low amounts and people I know , or have mutual contacts then the risk is less but still present.

If I know that person , then that’s different. But someone in a different country , who you haven’t dealt with before , no way Jose.

all very true, of course.

I'm not so sure that is easily done.

This is an image that other members would recognise and it is a hand written note.

I don't think a scammer would want to invest many hours on this and would rather invest in something that took less time..

Its a shame to say it but scammers will always scam ☹️
Every click every view every message every tiny bit of data is stored somewhere! Yet the platforms that shelter these snakes do nothing.
Tables need to be turned trust is a precious thing its more valuable than money but its broken too quick too easy by the greed for money....caveat emptor 🙄 capitalism at its finest!
Whenever I sell I always offer out my telephone number at the outset....I used to post it on the internet for all to see but well you can guess the result of that!
But .....I still say it phone calls or facetime even...are for the win... Its called human contact something the internet will never be able to synthesise.

Really easy ….

You advert something for sale on here with your handwritten note. The scammer uses the picture but simply changes the text on the note. 2 mins on photoshop.

Unless your about to start asking for a tin of custard next to the item , whilst standing on one leg and holding your driving license then it’s flawed. Anything can be edited and changed.

Either protect yourself using PayPal if unsure or buy from eBay Is the best advice. Another thing people can do is buddy up with friends on here and run a deal past them to see if they’ve missed the scam. I’ve sanity checked myself on a few occasions with friends if I had doubts.

It’s sad but true it’s very easy to scam people particularly the ‘cough’ older generation.

I didn't explain fully the process but please stop picking holes in something that does work.

There a quite a few steps involved but here are a few stages to give an idea.

Might I add that sales are approved by the moderators and given the green light before they proceed...

This method is used on several forums and works well

These rules have been drawn up by your Admin/Mod team in order to try and standardize the selling of items within this section. The rules are in our opinion fair and have been drawn up with input from the general membership whom they serve.

1) Eligibility to sell: Rules for eligibility include the following:

A) A member of ****** in good standing
B) Minimum of 25 (non post whoring/subsequent) posts and 30 days membership for non-VIP (See Post #2 in this thread for further clarification see also **************).
C) Breathing and have a pulse
D) Must be willing to help your buyer to resolve any "after" sales issues. (Immediately after the sale, within a reasonable amount of time.)

2) Registered non-Supporting members may list only one ****** per sale/trade and only have three ***** sales in a 30-day period and may not depict more than one ******* in a sales/trade thread. Additionally Non supporters may only list one ***** at a time and must wait until the last sale is complete before listing the next sale
(only one working sale at a time )
Only one sales thread to be created per item.

Supporting members are entitled to unlimited sales per 30-day period and the ability to list multiple ****** per sale. Members are encouraged to limit multiple ******* to five or fewer in one thread and to post new sales only after the current five items are completed. ****** parts (*****, ******, etc) have no sales limit.

3) If a registered non-Supporter posts a ****** and it is NUKED for any reason, or you withdraw the item, it counts against your 30 day sale/trade limit.

4) Photo requirements: every ****** or part listed for sale MUST have at least one or more photos (not links to photos or thumbnails) with a clear in focus shot of both the item for sale and handwritten tag (not photoshopped/computer generated/typed/iphone etc) included. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS.

Tags must include the following...
Your User ID :
Today’s full date (including year):

Photos must be hosted and REMAIN AVAILABLE for a minimum of three months after the sale. Deleting or moving images from your clickpix, imageshack, or any other picture service account that causes them to be unable to be viewed will constitute an infraction as well.

I appreciate that would help detet

Yeah can see how that could help deter, however it shifts the onus on to the moderators... How long before they want a piece of pie for all their time? Yet another umbrella....what happens legally if a scam is still perpetrated would they shoulder responsibility?
Facebook needs to be held accountable after all they're not free enthusiastic in the scene moderators are they.. they profit from a sale ! Albeit in a very roundabout way! IE it's site traffic therefore data point collection ...
